Re: New Popular Film Oscar

It’s always been that way, though. No-one was complaining, other than Spielberg himself, when those kinds of films were making huge coinage but got little love at the Oscars. It’s long been observed that their "reward" is the amount of money those films take home (and let’s not forget that...

Re: New Popular Film Oscar

Bill essentially makes the points I made in my lost post. There is another angle, too: back in the day, before audiences chose just to eat the big, calorific but empty blockbuster meals, they also used to make the "less popular" films massive hits as well. So in 1982, you had something lik...

Re: Avengers and the MCU

It was kind of rhetorical...just ribbing over the bizarre Richard Parker (not the tiger) stuff in the (not-so) Amazing movies. ;)

Re: J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek"

Um...Panny? ;)

It’s Paramount, not Panasonic (which *does* get affectionately known as Panny in certain tech circles)! :)

Re: J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek"

It’s negotiating tactics. But unfair on Paramount's side: when they restructured their deals for the third film, a bunch of them took essentially a pay cut already to do three for less and a fourth for more later. Now they want to do the fourth but don’t want to pay what they set in a deal! And ther...

Re: Avengers and the MCU

How do they explain the sister? Was she some hidden part of Richard Parker's (not the tiger) life? ;)

Re: New Popular Film Oscar

Wrote a good reply here and analysis on this new "Popular Oscar", already being derogatorily referred to as the Popcorn Oscar, but my pad gave up its battery before I could hit post and I lost it. Oh well, not going through that again. In short, I have a few "below the line" frie...

Re: Superman Actress Margot Kidder Passes Away

Oh, that’s so sad. Things seemed to be going so much better for her. Then again, with the kind of life she had led, sometimes there can be a bad reaction to when things actually start going okay again. Looks like she couldn’t actually handle being in a good place. So sad; I’d forgotten she was in Wa...

Re: The Simpsons

The trouble with figures like Walt Disney is that, once the same old stuff has been done and done and done again, they make for fairly obvious, and therefore easy, targets.

Re: How our society is becoming more like the one in WALL-E

Stanton’s final directive, that WALL•E is of course going to change the lives of those around him, in particular the human race, is abundantly apparent from the moment we see how we’ve become a bunch of baby-like fatties in the intervening years; the BNL name could well be taken for a metaphor of w...

Re: 1986 Transformers the movie returns to the big-screen!

Too packed as you say...unfortunately I think Mortal and Battle will both flop, with those audiences going mostly out of curiosity to see Aqua and Spidey. I’m hoping Bumble will be okay...intrigued to see what a big studio Travis Knight movie looks like! Poppins will be okay as it’s its own kind of ...

Re: 1986 Transformers the movie returns to the big-screen!

Ah, the good old days when you could get Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack...and Judd Nelson in the same cast. And poor Eric Idle (actually top billed!) doesn’t even get a credit! Funny that this was co-pro'd by Marvel Animation. I wonder how all that complicated mess of tangled rights works...
