Re: Condorito & other miscellaneous animated fare

Just a heads-up that Condorito: The Movie has been released on home video in North America .. on DVD only; not on Blu-ray. The DVD does contain an optional english-language dialogue track, however..! 8) This movie was goofy fun, and is well-worth seeking out. Now, if only the comic books on which it...

Re: WB Archive Collection: DVDs On Demand!

I believe by "Tex at Warner," EricJ was referring to Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons directed by Tex Avery. Droopy was an M-G-M character. There is a nifty ongoing (though only randomly updated) blog dedicated to analysis & commentary on WB cartoons Supervised by Fred Avery ....

Re: WB Archive Collection: DVDs On Demand!

It has been nice to see most (if not all?) of WB's H-B series sets getting a second DVD release, in recent months .. but I'd still like to see new sets of H-B shows that haven't yet been on home video (most of which are listed by various folks upthread). The Droopy set, as EricJ mentioned, is likewi...

Re: Isle of Dogs

IoD apparently did really well over the weekend (in 'per-theater' box office) .. and will be expanding incrementally over the coming weeks to ~1500 screens nationwide, by April 13th.

I'll definitely be seeing it again, this week .. and taking my brother, in tow..!

Re: Isle of Dogs

I liked it. A lot! :) It's very much a Kubo kind of film; if you enjoyed one, you'd probably love both. The main characters are well-realized, and the story unfolds in a gradual but nicely-paced modern retelling of the legend which opens the film (with several fun surprise plot twists along the way)...

Re: YouTube Goodness

Nickelodeon has made an animated short featuring Breanne Drouhard's wonderful webcomic, Harpy Gee (a weekly serialized 'RPG'-inspired tale which -- IMHO -- is already well on its way to becoming this generation's Bone ) .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSnlJW_ytMI Ms. Drouhard also produced, direc...

Re: Rocketeer follow-up with Female Rocketeer

So, it seems like the movie referenced in the OP of this thread may have been abandoned, and has effectively been replaced with a 'kid-oriented' Disney Junior animated series (as per the news story Dacey linked on the AV main page). I'm actually a bit more on-board with this method of revisiting The...

Re: Condorito & other miscellaneous animated fare

Another animated feature I've been hoping to see stateside -- which apparently does exist in an 'english-dubbed' form -- is the french movie Zombillénium , an adaptation of the BD album series by cartoonist/designer extraordinaire Arthur de Pins (who also makes his directorial debut with this film!)...

Re: Condorito

Yeah, a fairer comparison in terms of animation quality may be to the likes of A Monster in Paris or The Nut Job films. And the plot is 'paper-thin' .. but definitely keeps things moving with fun sight gags and 'out-of-nowhere' twists on movie tropes. There's even a fleeting bit of 'heart' no...

Condorito & other miscellaneous animated fare

Currently in limited release in U.S. movie theaters is Condorito: The Movie , adapted from the famous Chilean comic books by Pepo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE2eGfHI47c The movie is presented in Spanish language, with english subtitles .. and is apparently only in ~140 theaters nationwide (for...

Re: DuckTales: The Movie "Widescreen" question

It was actually once common practice to shoot feature animation at 1.33:1, with the intention of cropping the top & bottom of frame for 'theatrical' release. I know for certain that Don Bluth filmed The Secret of NIMH and An American Tail in this fashion. Compare the 'widescreen' versions of tho...

Re: Manga & Anime THREAD

Granted .. Mazinger-Z is a bit of an acquired taste; the original TV show is rather infamous for its cheap 're-used' animation, repetitive 'fight-of-the-week' stories & over-the-top cheesiness. I saw bits & pieces of the show when I was a kid (my father was stationed in Japan while in the US...

Coming to theaters in Japan in January 2018 .. and, presumably, to (japanese) Blu-ray & DVD by mid-Spring.

Re: YouTube Goodness

A very short (but nifty!) experimental animation, juxtaposing forced-perspective drawings with a moving mounted camera .. the first half offers a time-lapse overview of the process; the second half features the combined effect:
