Re: DreamWorks' "Home"
And those are just the US numbers. There are flops and there are bombs. Since Antz and Shrek DWA hasn't had an out and out bomb. Even so, I can remember Massacre of Summer '13 analysts looking at Turbo's budget-vs.-grosses loss in the same sentence as RIPD and Lone Ranger saying "What happened?? " ...

Re: DreamWorks' "Home"
Sorry Vi, but I will venture out and say that I think Home will be DWA's first real bomb. Just some numbers to take into context: - Mr. Peabody & Sherman $111M - Rise of the Guardians $103M - Turbo: 83M - Penguins of Madagascar: 82.8M - Spirit: $73M - Road to El Dorado $50M - Sinbad: $26M It's got ...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
I think the only time anyone ever really thought about the DWA label was when the first Shrek came out, because of the anti-Disney stance. (Actually quite a few people I talked to at the time were like: "oh yeah, it's because of that guy Disney fired"). That's the only time. And even with all the m...

Re: How does everyone feel about Disney these days?
Maybe Disney didn't consider Robinsons damaged goods... before Lassetter came. Maybe it was on of Disney's hoped-for hits... before Lassetter came. Maybe Anderson, Musker, Clements, Sanders, and Keane were considered one of the "special" artists at the studio that you don't interfere with... before...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
I still don't think "the public" don't know the difference between ANY of the studios' output. To most everyone, it's the "new Disney" out when a new film hits. Pixar is the only one who even seems to have made something of a minor dent in the consciousness of who makes these things. There's the ol...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Yes: Dreamworks (with a little help from Blue Sky and Sony) have become the reason the public CAN'T STAND non-Pixar/WDFA CGI films, and would, conceivably, welcome hand-drawn back with open arms, just to break up the corny monotony. This, ironically, from the guy who claimed "2-D is dead!", and spen...

Re: How does everyone feel about Disney these days?
Since Eric seems to have been IN the story sessions at Disney while Robinsons was being made, perhaps he could explain how the film was more than half way through animation when JL came in to make any changes? Oh, I wouldn't dream of selfishly taking credit for what Jim Hill worked so hard on, at t...

Except for the Disney X-D series, of course. (And hopefully not as gratuitously goofy.)Dacey wrote:Interesting. And the rumor is that the movie would involve Tony Stark "recruiting him" into The Avengers, which would be a great way to give us something we haven't seen before in that regard.

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Instead, Dreamworks, and their many specific imitators, have helped do their part in the cause of hand-drawn animation, by putting the public firmly in the belief that if they never see another CGI film for the rest of their lives, it'll be ten billion years too soon.

Re: How does everyone feel about Disney these days?
I feel the main thing that Lasseter has bought to WDAS is the introduction to adding a twist to the plot where one character suddenly turns into the bad guy. This started over at Pixar with Toy Story 2 and I've noticed it has slowly crept into many of WDAS recent pics. Sometimes it works, sometimes...

Re: How does everyone feel about Disney these days?
However, looking at what's actually happened at WDAS under Lasseter, I can't help but wonder whether he's not-yet achieved the full realization of that transformation. Of course, on the first film that he really had control over at the studio, he fired the director (Chris Sanders on Bolt ). Then, a...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Sorry, I just don't agree with this. Some cartoons back in the day were definitely mean-spirited but when exactly did DWA have "generally nasty characters"? And when did they show "combative gags" and "punishment"? What made me think of the Freleng-Katzenberg analogy in the first place was another ...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Crazy idea: DWA should become the new flagbearer for hand-drawn animation. Think about it. They'd be the only game in town, and if succesful (okay, BIG "if"), it would push Dis into doing the same thing again. Not to mention the implied sadistic relish in forcing Katzenberg's "2-D is dead, because ...
