Henry Selick leaves Laika

Post by Josh » October 6th, 2009, 11:31 pm

According to Variety, Henry Selick has left Laika Entertainment.
Peter Debruge wrote:Selick had been looking for another feature to oversee, but with his contract up and no next project in place for him to tackle, the helmer decided to move on.
With this news in mind, I would love to see Selick re-team with Tim Burton for Frankenweenie.

I think it's too late for Frankenweenie...isn't it already in production? Burton is a director, though I'm not sure who is taking on day to day duties, but I think it's the same crew as Corpse Bride.

According to Alice in Wonderland producer Richard D. Zanuck, Burton's next feature will be Dark Shadows. But I think some development has indeed already taken place on Frankenweenie.

Still, I really hope Selick somehow returns to Disney. Something about his being there just feels right to me. I would love to see Selick, Lasseter, and Burton collaborate on a film. I imagine the result would be amazing.

Yeah, same here. You know what the perfect movie for those three would be? The Phantom Tollbooth.

I heard about this while I was talking with a friend of mine from L.A. I wonder what Selick would do now that he's left this place.

Not exactly related but it has to do with Laika:

Jan Pinkava is directing his next project there:

You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

According to Variety, Henry Selick has struck an exclusive long-term deal to make stop-motion features for Disney/Pixar.

In the report, I found this quote particularly noteworthy:
Variety wrote:"I'll quote Dick Cook right after 'James and the Giant Peach' was finished. He said, 'We don't believe this is a viable medium anymore, and we're not going to do it,'?" Selick told Daily Variety. "A few years later they shut down 2D. It's great that both of those things are back."

Wow (for Selick returning to Disney)...and WOW (for Cook's unexpected comment).

Yes, not only great that these things are back, but nice that the disillusioned loners (Lasseter, Burton, Selick, etc) have all come "home" too.
