I think it's much easier to list the animated movies I DON'T like... (they are not in any particular order)...

1. Doogal
2. Arthur and the Invisibles
3. James and the Giant Peach (but the songs are catchy)
4. Antz
5. Secret of NIMH 2 (they Ruined it!)

There's probably more, but it's 3am and I'm tired
Life tastes like happy.

You don't like Antz!? How come?

I thought it was great, and IMO, I liked it much more than A Bug's Life. (Just by an inch, though. ;))

Totally! I hated this film! It was just... gah. I really want to watch the original, though.

Btw, welcome to the boards, Roberta! Ps, love your av! :)

It had a different look because of the very different material. The only thing they had in common was the whole bugs thing. Bug's Life was a much more light-hearted story in which the colorful, rounded designs were appropriate.

They would not have been appropriate for Antz, a film that dealt with political repression, genocide, social orders being overthrown, etc....not that I "loved" the Antz designs, but the emotions were well conveyed on the very different characters.

Not that I'm trying to put down ABL, but many have said (I just mean people in general ) how ABL the characters were all designed differently while in Antz "they all looked the same. HUH???? I had a hard enough time telling "Princess Atta" from her mom, her, uh, little sister I guess? Flick, that schoolteacher ant, the nanny ant, the uh, other ants.....?

Sure, you had the circus bugs and all, but the ants were the main characters. They all looked EXACTLY the same to me. (good thing Atta had that crown thing on her head, or her "queen in training" crown.)

The circus bugs were cute and all, but like I said earlier, they weren't really the heart of the story, although they were an important part of it. And what about the grasshoppers???? Hello??? The only one who looked a little different from the rest, 'cause he was chubby, was Molt. Hopper was mostly differentiated due to his central role as the villain, and Spacey's awesome performance of course. But he looked extremely similar to the other grasshoppers.

In Antz they all had the same basic look, but the characters were deeper, the story more resonant, the voice acting (on the whole) better. Especially Gene Hackman. :) Stallone's ant looked nothing like Z's ant, ditto Azteca, Barbados, Cutter, etc....you couldn't mix any of them up.
And yeah, I agree that they weren't terribly attractive, :P kind of mechanical and earth-colored, but maybe that was the point. It was a dark story, dealing with insects as a metaphor for human corruption. Maybe not every character should look like a blueberry.... :P

You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

I know, guess I was just defending Antz in general, not just 'cause of what you said Meg. :)

These things are always rather rough...(in no particular order)

Favorites:

Plague Dogs
Princess Mononoke
My Neighbor Totoro
Bambi
Dumbo
Lilo and Stitch
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (in its whole 30 minute glory!)
Ringing Bell
Arcadia of my Youth
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Ratatouille
Hedgehog in the Fog

Honorable mentions:
-The other Disney golden era movies--Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, etc. I don't love these films, but any lover of animation can't help but be awed by them.
-The Last Unicorn / The Hobbit and surprisngly...Nausicaa! Forget rankin bass for a second, this is all about love for Top Craft.
-All that Wallace and Gromit stuff...how can't you like it?
Roberta E. Norman wrote:5. Secret of NIMH 2 (they Ruined it!)
-I'm going to run counter-popular opinion here and say that in a rather different way, they ruined Secret of NIMH 1 as well, though it gets honorable mention for wonderful animation and a great soundtrack. This one is all about the backgrounds and color coordination!
-Phoenix 2772--really stretching to list anything by Tezuka. If nothing else, this one shows an amazing love and celebration of the art of animation. There is a sense of unlimited potential for the medium when watching this film which is otherwise too long for my tastes...
