So do we have any updates on what the story will be like? I am excited for the art of this movie. I hope they really push the painterly thing far (much farther than that clip that was on youtube forever :P).

from a recent interview with Nathan Greno, co-director of Rapunzel:

http://ultimatedisney.com/bolt-superrhino.html

Q: Nathan, how much can you speak about Rapunzel without putting our lives at risk?

Nathan Greno: I couldn't be happier with the direction Rapunzel is headed. It's a very smart, funny comedy. Stay tuned!

What the... funny comedy? I want an epic, grande fairytale spectacle with dramatic, layered storylines. Not some happy go lucky funny comedy about a girl who has trouble washing her hair and keeps bird's nests in it. I can only hope that they haven't completely turned it into your typical generic romantic comedy. I want Beauty And The Beast, not... SHREK...

This is NOT what I want one of the directors to tell me!!! I'm actually quite afraid and distrubed now!

new concept art!

Now THIS I like, not really close to the Fragonard style here, but I'm sure it'll be gorgeous and groundbreaking!

For anyone who can't see them I found those in IMDB:

Wow,looks really great :D but I think it's a concept art,Rapunzel standing alone near the prince's kingdom doesn't make sense with the story, the castle reminds me of Beauty And The Beast.

I'm really hoping for an epic tale, like we're used to :(
All of the artwork is extremely beautiful, I have a feeling it's gonna look fantastic, though I have my doubts about this being in CGI, the artwork of the prince climbing the tower is amazing and shows the potential of a handdrawn 2D film...

I hear what you are saying Locall. Every bit of concept art is hand drawn and is, for me, absolutely breathtaking. But I have to keep reminding myself that it's in CGI, which disappoints me a little bit. But then I remember reading how they are trying to present it like an oil painting. So it's done in CG but looks hand drawn. As long as the story is solid and the songs are wonderful I won't care. I still think Disney makes quality animated films, so I'll be seeing this in the cinemas.

Bill1978-The CGI is to make the film to look like a painting,it's not CGI like Finding Nemo or Toy Story.

On some forums a story is posted on how they found a solution to the story problems. Apparently they combined the story of Rapunzel with an Estonian story called "the grateful prince".

A story of a king who gets lost in a forest. An old woman/with/fortune teller finds him and says she will show him the way out, but only if he agrees to give the old woman the first thing that comes out of his palace doors. The king agrees, and soon there after his son is born. Unwilling to maybe give up his son to the old witch he swaps the boy for a young peasant girl and agrees that the boy will be raised in obscurity as a normal peasant. The old witch soon comes round to claim her part of the deal and the king hands her the girl. At some point the real prince finds out what happened and then begins a mission to set things right again, free the girl and solve everything.

Sounds like an interesting, but subtle twist to the story, which allows the directors to hav an interesting story perspective when Rapunzel is caught in her tower and has limited storylines as she's confined to a limited space. Sounds like an awesome premise, close to the original story!

If that is true, that does sound like a good story. Almost like "Sleeping Beauty" where for a good portion, the prince takes center stage. (I'm still waiting for a 'prince movie', though.)

But where could the comedy come in? I don't want comedy. BOLT was hilarious, and I'm sure there will be plenty of fun stuff in Princess/Frog, so why not make an epic, sweeping fantasy with Rapunzel?

Hasn't "Rapunzel" been a comedy ever since the start of production?
