1950's Hansel and Gretel DVD

Post by Deco King » November 26th, 2009, 12:12 pm

There is already a DVD of the stop motion animated 1950's version of the
Hansel and Gretel opera by Humperdinck , but it's quality is barely watchable , washed out colours and VHS quality picture - better than nothing - but only just!

The trouble is it's only a minority audience , realistically any distributor would sell so few copies that an all talking singing dancing restoration would just be a waste of money and yet is does have a kind of quaint 1950's charm!

Has anyone else out there seen the movie?

If it's the one I think it is then, yes, in a 1980s/1990s showing on either BBC 2 or Channel Four in the afternoon. It was feature-length, right?

I remember they finally had the idea to changed the Sandman's aria to a male tenor--
Which seemed to make sense, as it always seemed a bit confusing to have "him" singing soprano in the original opera.
