Looks that kill - Yuki7

Post by hcjehg » June 16th, 2011, 11:39 am

Check out this animation :-O

International Girl of Mystery. Operates as a spy-for-hire from her secret HQ in Tokyo. Formerly an agent of F.O.X.Y., trained in Paris. Expert in information recovery, undercover operations, and catwalk fashion.

It is publicity for a book/dvd, but well worth the look (in my opinion)

I have the first book + DVD (Seductive Espionage: The World of Yuki 7), and definitely plan to get this new book, this summer..!

Image

Yuki 7 creator Kevin Dart was a background artist/designer on (the criminally-cancelled) Sym-Bionic Titan.

Image

The premise of these books is rather fun: Yuki 7 is a (alas, fictional) series of spy movies from the 1960s. Kevin Dart presents movie posters, soundtrack album and 'novelization' covers, and various ephemera from the 'franchise'. Sprinkled throughout the book are Yuki 7 pin-ups by various guest artists, in a similar 1960s style.

Image

On the DVD is a 'trailer' for one of the Yuki 7 films: A Kiss from Tokyo on the first, and Looks That Kill on the new release; this latter being from a period during which Yuki 7 is teamed with a group of lovely female spies, the 'Gadget Girls'.

Image

Both trailers were made entirely in Adobe After Effects by Kevin Dart and Stephane Coedel; although both are great fun, the new trailer is far more ambitious than the first! I'd love to see a full-length Yuki7 production in this style, someday .. even if it's only a 30-minute DTV.

As a fan of 60s cool, from the authentic (Flint, Fathom, etc) and the pastiche (Austin Powers, natch), I'm loving this and may well have to hunt some of Yuki 7 (surely an obvious Bond reference?) down.

The designs are great (more than a little of Raquel Welch's female spy in there!) and that's a cheeky circle 7 logo, probably not intentioned but still close. I'd go ga-ga over any kind of animated movie.

Thanks for the images, Droo. Great idea to promote the series of 60s films and soundtracks, and they all look pretty authentic! Yuki 7 And The Gadget Girls: maybe this is a "calling card"...? :)

"Yuki-7 and the Gadget Girls" as a feature - same ambitious level - yes please.

I would be the first to be standing in line at the cinema :-D

... and it would be an honor to work for such a cool project :-D

... and part of the merchandising is already in place :-D

Kevin Dart slipped a Yuki 7 movie title into this background painting for Sym-Bionic Titan ..

I like the sound of that other film playing there too, and the building names! ;)

Mr. Dart is also apparently a Seinfeld fan: :)

So, over the past decade, Yuki7 has continued to evolve into a genuine indie animated series from Chromosphere Studios .. still firmly-packed with retro-kitsch visuals by Kevin Dart -- though a bit more 'polished', and slightly-more 'whimsical' than its earliest incarnation, at the start of this thread.

The current storyline began a couple years ago with a 'micro series' of three 7-minute episodes .. the first being "They Called Her Number Seven":

Well that’s a blast from the past! Nuts and funny, love the Yuki7 Go! theme, and it’s so well directed, with a fun script! The voices are cool, too. Totally bonkers! :)
