Phase Two of Marvel Studios and the Avengers

Post by Dan » October 12th, 2012, 11:29 pm

With Phase One completed and now all available on blu ray, Marvel is now focusing their efforts on Phase Two. The mid-credits scene in Avengers obviously gave a hint of the things to come and the slate that was announced during Comic Con elaborates further on the direction the studio is taking.

The third Iron Man venture will be based on the "Extremis" storyarc by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov. The story concerns Tony's internal conflict of whether or not he has tried to better himself over the years and the discovery of a project that once again attempts to duplicate and improve upon Super Soldier Serum. Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, and Paul Bettany will all repraise their previous roles from the second film. Ben Kingsley joins the cast as main villain the Mandarin and Guy Pearce will appear as Aldrich Killian, creator of the Extremis virus.

Thor: The Dark World

Director: Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, The Emperor's Clothes)
An ancient and shadowy race has resurfaced so that they could plunge the universe into eternal darkness. With even Odin and the other Asgardians unable to stop this threat, Thor embarks on a dangerous journey that will lead him back to Earth and Jane Foster, but may force him to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the Nine Realms. Virtually everyone from the first film is back to repraise their previous roles. The only difference being Zachary Levi replacing Joshua Dallas as Warriors Three member Fandral. Ironically, Levi was supposed play Fandral in the first film, but had to drop out due to his commitments to Chuck. Now he's reclaimed the role due to Dallas' commitments to Once Upon a Time. Christopher Eccleston joins the cast as new villain Malekith the Accursed.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Release Date: April 4, 2014
Directors: Anthony and Joe Russo (Community, Arrested Development)
Steve Rogers is still trying to adjust to the world around him after seventy years in cryogenic stasis when a Cold War assassin begins to appear on the scene. What Captain America will suddenly discover is that this Winter Soldier is a familiar face from his past. Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan will repraise their previous roles of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes respectively. Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson will be bringing their characters Nick Fury and Black Widow into the story. Anthony Mackie is in the running to play Falcon and Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks to be the favorite to play the female lead, who may or may not be Sharon Carter, descendant of Steve's old love Peggy.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Release Date: August 1, 2014
Director: James Gunn (Slither, Super)
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a rag-tag team of super-humans and extraterrestrial adventurers dedicated to safeguarding the Milky Way galaxy. Based on concept art shown, the team will be made up of Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora.

The Avengers 2
Release Date: May 1, 2015
Director: Joss Whedon
Storyline has yet to be announced, but indications are they it will likely involve the coming of Thanos. Perhaps it might be about the Infinity Gauntlet?

One other film on the Marvel pipeline that may or may not make it onto the Phase Two slate is Ant-Man, which Marvel confirmed was still in the process of being made by Edgar Wright.
