According to Variety, Fox wants to "strengthen their animation division at the studio, and set BlueSky in motion to direct a new film every year, with several projects already in the works..."

...Oh, DO they? Think Ferdinand has a little something to say about that first. ;)

(And ever since Ice Age left, BlueSky's Rio sequels have been so slavishly trying to replicate 00's Dreamworks's style to the last detail, the Will Smith comedy seemed only inevitable.)

There's only been one Rio sequel. And it was made before Ice Age "left" as you word it.
