Turns out you *can* lead a horse to water, *and* make it drink!
And you can
bring a horse to water, but a pencil must be led.

There are loads of overt and not so overt ET rips that continue to this day...but how that means ET was not worth knocking off still has me stumped.
Since you hijacked this thread and not me, sure, I'll play along:
Even though I'm not quite understanding the logic here--My point was, nothing is "worth" knocking off, no matter how good the original was, how nonsensically you do it, or how desperate or often it's done. That's like saying "I have a better stereo system in my apartment, because mine's
stolen more often! "
It's not some "prize" to be won, to say that ET had "more" ripoffs than Avatar, and was therefore a greater cultural success...And if it was, I'd be watching that Asylum "Legend of Aladdin" right now, since the Disney live-action got one and the animated one didn't.
Just that 70's-80's Saturday morning knew that a new generation of movies/TV was grabbing kids' attention, and since we always watched the new-season previews to see WHAT movies and TV shows were desperately being clone-replicated ("Oh, look, Turbo Teen, it's a Knight Rider show!"), it was more a case of "Okay, if you're going to do ET, let's see whatcha got."
And with Rubik, we soon...regretted that curiosity.
