That part does suck, but I don't have laserDisc, and I refuse to use VHS anymore, so I have the DVD. And it's better then nothing.

Submit your questions to Aardman's Nick Park!

Post by Ben » February 1st, 2006, 5:33 pm

This Thursday, Nick Park will be in New York to speak about the upcoming DVD release of his Oscar-nominated animated feature, Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, on DVD.

If you have a question specific to this release, or to do with Aardman's slate of projects, such as the end-of-year theatrical film Flushed Away, please let us know in this thread.

We will put the most appropriate to him during our exclusive one on one chat on Thursday.

New York City, you mean?

Hmm. I'd ask him about Tortoise and the Hare.

Ask if he'd ever try out any 2D animation products, and also if he'd ever make character designs different than what he ussually does.

Here's a simple one, which he may not have any answer or control over:

Why a 2-disc for region 2/UK and a single disc for the US/region 1, and what are the major content changes?

How involved is he in Flushed Away, and what does he think of the move to CGI?

Could he ever see Wallace And Gromit being done in a CG way, even if it was the only way to make another film for less?

I'm curious about the whole reasoning behind Flushed Away being CGI, it may have been in articles or interviews elsewhere but I couldn't find it. And will they make another W&G film, will those character eventually go CGI too? how much will stay in clay? (that rhymes.... )

so yeah, just stuff like that. But I'm sure it's either mentioned in articles already or you were already planning on asking those kind of questions anyway. But what I'm most curious about, is his view on the whole CGI bandwagon stuff that's going on... all the studios rushing into the computer animation business everywhere and how he sees his own animation/style survive in all of it. Perhaps cliché questions he gets all day, but it's always good to hear these animation legends' opinions on it.

Keep generating questions and if somebody can eventually boil it down to a succinct list of 8 or 9 questions that'd be great.

Everyone seems to be interested in why Flushed Away is CGI...But a lot of people are probably planning on asking that.

THE SMALL WORLD OF WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT
In any animated film, the characters' performances belong as much--or more--to the animators as to the actors providing the voices. That is especially true in the world of stop-motion animation, where the animators spend countless hours bringing inanimate puppets to life, bit by infinitesimal bit.It is almost impossible to fathom the countless hours of meticulous work and the level of concentration required to make a film in the Aardman style of animation. If you think of it in numeric terms alone: there are 24 frames per second of film time, so depending on the action in a sequence, it is possible to have 24 separate poses to shoot per character for every second in a scene, each pose involving the tiniest increment of movement for body, head, arms, legs, hands, fingers, eyes, ears, mouth, and so on. In addition, the Plasticine used is malleable, so there is constant resculpting involved.Multiply all of that by every character in every scene, factoring in the movements of any props that are on camera, and you begin to understand the task that is literally "at hand." Perhaps the greatest testament to the patience and tenacity of the animation team is that on days when as many as 30 sets were in simultaneous operation, the optimum goal was to accomplish a mere 10 seconds of completed film."Making a 30-minute Wallace & Gromit movie is time-consuming and requires a lot of patience and care. Making an 85-minute feature is like making the Great Wall of China with matchsticks," Steve Box laughs.

I got that release too (in fact, I have the actual disc right here with no time to watch it!!) but was just wondering what the heck they could have added to all that and made it a 2-disc for R2 in the UK.

I'll check one out in the stores on release day (Feb 20 here, but I got my region 1 already). ;)
