One Piece

Post by eddievalient » September 29th, 2007, 1:41 pm

To any who might care, the Funimation version of One Piece premieres on Cartoon Network tonight (not sure if it's 10 or 10:30). Funi showed the first three eps of their version at a convention in Atlanta recently and those who saw it have said that it's much better than the previous dub by 4Kids (although the 4Kids version has started growing on me, as blasphemous as that sounds). If anyone watches it, lets post our thoughts on it here, okay? Oh, and here's the opening they're reportedly using (only they're going to translate the song to english, which ought to be interesting to hear):

UPDATE!: The first One Piece boxset from Funimation will be released on May 27th. Interestingly, after saying repeatedly that they couldn't do them yet due to a claim by Viz, the boxset will include the first 13 episodes of the series (covering the Morgan arc, the Buggy arc and the first half of the Captain Kuro arc). I think this is as it should be, but that leaves a question as to the newer episodes they've been running on Toonami. Will Funi do an alternating release and have the next boxset be from the current season, or will they do things chronologically all the way and not get to it for years? They haven't said anything yet, but I'll update again when I find something out.

I can't believe there are so many episodes of One Piece. I'm not so much a fan of it, but it might be because I have only watched the 4Kids dub and read the Manga.

I hope they do a better job with this new dub, I might give it another chance.

I've read the manga since the beginning of its US release (I was a charter subscriber to Shonen Jump when that mag was just getting started) and have always loved the story, although I don't get fanatical about it. I've seen some of the 4Kids version and actually, I don't think it's so bad. Badly edited, yes, but it has that gonzo, gung-ho enthusiasm that reminds me of the kind of cartoon that used to be on Saturday mornings and I just can't bring myself to hate it. However, since Funimation started doing it, the quality of the writing and acting has improved 1000% and is much closer to what's in the Japanese version (which will be on the dvd, so you can judge for yourself). For the fans, the dvd should be a no brainer.

UPDATE!: Okay, I just came across two major bits of news. Cartoon Network has cancelled One Piece and they don't intend to air any new episodes. That's the bad news. The good news is that apparently (according to someone who allegedly spoke to them at a convention) Funimation is shifting the DVD release into overdrive. What I read is that because they're so far behind by starting at the beginning, they're planning on releasing a set of 13 eps every six to eight weeks until they get to where CN dropped the show, at which point I assume the release will slow down a bit. On the one hand that's cool because I won't have to wait five or six months in between sets. On the other hand, I don't know how I'll keep up unless I build it into my budget. LOL I'm gonna end up turning this thread into a One Piece blog.
