Um...wow. I was excited before but now I'm super-excited. The animation does look kind of like a videogame, but I really don't have a problem with it. As long as it's well written, which it does seem to be, that's all that matters. And even if the animation itself is less than stellar, ya gotta admit, the movie's got a great look. Major eye candy there. August 15th, folks. Mark it on your calendar.

Ahh! After all this time, I finally realise that it's not the Cologne Wars, as mentioned by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.

Seriously, blah animation against some decent backgrounds. Lameo streaming video kept pausing so I gave up two-thirds through. I've seen enough to know that this isn't a big screen movie, whatever the marketing want us to think.

Cartoon Network, here I come, but I'm saving my Lucas Movie Dollars for Indy.

Since there's no topic yet, I thought I'd start one. Anyone who sees the movie, tell us what you thought (I'm waiting til next week so I can see it at The Grand-stadium seating, state of the art sound system, screen half the size of an Imax, oh yeah. Ya gotta love a business trip).

The series starts (I think) October 8th. Let the countdown begin!

Says who? I was just looking at Box Office Mojo and, granted, there aren't many user ratings yet, but the ones there are are mostly A's and B's. There are almost as many F's as A's though, so I think this is gonna be one of those love-it-or-hate-it kind of things. Personally, from what I've seen it looks awesome and I think it's gonna be another critic-proof film (like the latest Mummy picture which to date has made over $242 million, likely ensuring we'll see another one made whether we like it or not). Besides, lest we forget, Lucas is really only out to please himself at this point and he doesn't care about popular opinion. If you don't like it, don't watch it, simple as that.

I can totally appreciate that Star Wars has hard-core fans and that it means a lot to them....I'm not in any way trying to disdain that. I'm not a HUGE fan of Star Wars but I love "backstories" and I was pretty excited about the prequels, but I was very let down after Phantom and never quite recovered from that.

I guess one thing that kind of frustrates me about the whole Star Wars franchise is the lack of closure. And I don't mean it has to end--I just mean that it never feels like there's an emotional bedrock to it anymore. With Eps IV, V and VI there were characters who had issues and interactions that were eventually resloved in some way (Luke makes peace with his past/father, Han and Leia finally get together, the Empire is destroyed, etc...) At least there's an ending, some kind of resolution.

One thing I liked about Sith was that it was a story that had a beginning, middle and end, as rote as the execution was. We knew that they had to bring Anakin to a certain place by the end of the film and that there would be a resolution and a theme. Phantom and Clones were just "stepping stones" to Sith but there was almost nothing in the way of character development or any insight into how the characters feel about each other. With the original Trilogy the bonds between the characters deepened thorought the 3 films (ESPECIALLY in Empire).

It would be different if Lucas wanted to keep making movies....but he isn't making movies...he's making "episodes" but this time in the strictest term of the word and not in the fanciful, old-fashioned sense of the first time around. Going from a movie to a TV show and then back to a movie (but based off a TV show) and then back to the TV show very much negates the feeling of emotional closure as said before.

Most importantly, with all the "switching" of TV/film/TV, there's the fact that not only do we already know how it's going to turn out but we've already seen how it turns out.

And like I said, it would be different (though maybe a little frustrating) if Lucas wanted to make "one more movie" showing us what went on between II and III. But he's not making another movie. He's not even making this movie, even though he says he's "making it for himself." How can he be making it for himself if....he's not even making it?

According to the writers, he's very hands-on. He approves every script for every episode and nothing goes in the show without his say so. It's not technically the same as "making it himself", but he's still guiding the franchise where he wants it to go.

Star Wars/Empire/Jedi feel so close nit because that's what they were.

You can forget Lucas' "nine film" ideas...they didn't exist. We know that Star Wars was a stand alone film when it hit theaters in May 1977. The huge success saw a sequel being written, not by Lucas, but by other writers. Darth Vader was not Luke's father until the second or third drafts of Empire, which should tell you something. Empire was in pre-production as "Chapter II" before revisionist Lucas swapped the title of Star Wars for "Episode IV: A New Hope" in Christmas 77/78 re-issues.

The Original Trilogy was just that: a three film arc that works because it was put together like that, one after the other. You don't need backstory to watch it...it's all in there. Plus, none of the backstory as we've seen in the prequels make sense. When Old Ben tells Luke of the Clone Wars, it's meant to be some far off battle like the Crusades or something, like happening "a thousand years ago" or some such mumbo jumbo - not something that occurred just before Luke was born (or even during his infancy).

My thinking is that if Lucas had <I>really</I> had a plan, the OT would have made up chapter/episodes VII, VIII and IX, leaving IV and V to be the Clone Wars years and a VI that would bridge them.

We can't even watch the whole "saga" in the correct order anyway, since all the secrets and surprises of the OT are blown!

Basically, it's all bad storytelling. One should never have to go off and catch up on extra material in order to get the full story. The Star Wars films should have included this all from the outset.

But then again, Clone Wars isn't intended to be good storytelling. It's intended to kickstart another wave of Star Wars commercialisation, and little more.

I just think they should do a movie about opposing perfumes...and call it The Cologne Wars...!
