Re: The Lion King Remake

Anyone wishing to avoid disappointment likely needs to not see the new version. Their misguided attempt of "realism" seems like it's driving the soul out of the story.

Re: Mulan (Live-action remake)

“Mushu is not in Mulan” may be trending, but who's to say that's not a celebratory remark? Not much context there. But even looking at the posts, opinion is divided. (And, always keep in mind that the naysayers speak more loudly than others.) Regardless, I also was not aware that anyone claimed that...

Re: And the person who is rebooting The Flinstones is....

This talk of being "adult" may just be to get people's attention. The old show could be considered "adult" in its own way, as it was somewhat subversive and certainly did its share of satire.

The new show has a lot of development to go, so well see what develops.

Re: Avengers and the MCU

I really enjoyed Far from Home. The plot has holes that you don't have to look too far for, but it was great fun, with a few twists (some obvious, some not) and some great battles. Jake was very good (admittedly ranging - in a fun way - from sincere to hammy), I liked the students (the teachers not ...

Re: Disney's The Little Mermaid (Live-Action)

I always heard the red hair (and the "Jam session" inspiration for doing the project in the first place) was based on the Brothers Hildebrandt: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e3/c6/3e/e3c63e52cd194dfbf780e7febd24191a.jpg One has to admit there's a strong resemblance in the painting. Man, those Hild...

Re: Criterion Collection

Hey, Ben, I packs your stuff real good. :) The big issue would be packing it properly and still try to pretend that it's under $25 in value!

Re: Back to the Future

I saw that last weekend at a local bookstore, and had meant to mention it to Ben. Thanks for bringing it up. It looks fun, though like the similar "Star Wars by Shakespeare" books, I doubt I'd ever read it all the way through. Good for a skim, at least.

Re: Criterion Collection

It is a great deal. Of course, the only film of his that I have is The Seventh Seal. I bought it several years ago, and it's still in the shrink wrap. So, probably I'm good for Bergman.

Re: Mulan (Live-action remake)

Looks like we watched it at about the same time. I really liked it. This is one live action adaptation I can get behind. Unlike more magical stories, and as much as I love the original, I think the new film has a chance to be as good or better.

Re: Toy Story 4

Eric, of course, is right. I brain farted and went to Stinky Pete. Who, yeah, is a bit like Gabby Hayes but does not share his name.

Re: Toy Story 4

Gabby has the same meaning on this side of the pond. Anyhow, back to Toy Story 4---! We almost went last weekend, but my son declared that another Toy Story was unwarranted, so it would be a waste of theatre time. So, we stayed home and watched Lego Movie 2. Meanwhile, my boy is holding out for a Sp...

Re: Criterion Collection

I did pretty good catching up last year, but I still have a few (10-15?) titles on my wish list. The Channel is helping me check a few of them out beforehand, which takes the edge off a need to purchase. Of course, some Channel titles are more temporary than others, so a few titles that I really lik...

Re: Toy Story 4

Not to redirect the conversation, but out of interest I Googled "gaby," and this is what came up at dictionary.com: gaby [ gey-bee ] noun, plural ga·bies. British Dialect. a fool. I didn't know that one. Maybe Ben's familiar with it. And of course, any self-respecting cartoon fan should remember Gab...

Re: Toy Story 4

Gabby Gabby (nudge Droo! ;)) I'm guessing, because I'd spelled her name 'Gaby'..? That's force of habit; I was good friends with a Gaby in high school .. and she was always quick to correct anyone who spelled it with two 'b's: "Gaby is short for Gabrielle; there's only one 'b' in my name." :mrgreen...

Re: Criterion Collection

Not bewilderment, just amusement. I know, too, that you didn't stop with the big box!! I was relatively restrained this time, with just 7 titles; Ben got 1 or 2 more, with the two of us overlapping on half of our picks. For me: Notorious, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, A Face in the Crowd, In the Heat of t...
