The character design looks to me like a college CGI project. I am open to being pleasantly surprised but more than any other CGI film to date it looks like the producers simply said, "Hey, let's do something with computer animation!" I'll definitely be seeing Star Wars. I judge each movie on its own merits. If it's a sequel and it's good it is still good. If it's a remake and it's good it's still good. Of course you don't want everything to be a remake or a sequel.

The people that make it in entertainment have the drive NOT to take no for an answer and find their own door into studios. Unfortunately, some of these people are also hacks and bootlickers, too.
It is likely that many talented people are also kept out of the industry if they don't play the games.
