Congratulations to Ratatouille! Gotta love the Pixar! I'm hoping they can keep their successful Oscar run well into the future! Personally, I would have voted for Persepolis, but I don't mind it's loss, considering the high quality of the winner. This is the first time this decade where I had two an...

I can't believe La Vie En Rose didn't walk away with a Foreign Film nod. Saw it over the weekend, and...wow...heavy going but brilliant. Marion Cotillard deserves the Best Actress award she's up for for her amazing portrayal of Edith Piaf, along with the Make Up prize, for the stunning transformati...

Just thought it'd be fun to start keeping a tab on the films in contention for Animated Feature:

Persepolis has just been nominated for Best Foreign Film by the Independent Spirit Awards.

(Persepolis also won the audience award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.)

I think mo-cap got very due attention with Happy Feet. Even if it was only the dance sequences that were capped, they did vote for that film and not the totally keyframed Cars. So that does constitute the "endorsement" by the animation Academy's members (Waking Life was also digital rotoscop...

Notice how that's not even an issue this year. Even if Beowulf gets good reviews I don't think it has nearly enough keyframed animation to even be nom'd. There hasn't been any discussion of mo-cap films and Oscars this year so far. (I guess 'cause of the new rules??) Not when you see it! Wink Hmmm....

Ratatouille is in for sure. However, I don't think it's as solid for the win as it may seem. So far, the animation branch has shown that they like to "spread-the-wealth" in awarding their statues. They have awarded so many animation legends already - Hayoa Miyazaki, Nick Park, and Mr. Brad Bird hims...

Yeah, I saw that - cool! I think this year there's going to be a lot of competition for that title though. I can't remember if Paris, je t'aime made the list? With the studio backing that has, it could go that way. But lovely that an animated film was put forward. :) No, Paris, je'taime is not on t...

What about Paprika ? :) (AHH, I actually found out it was being shown in my area recently in a special showing, but I MISSED the date! :( ) Paprika was submitted last year and made the qualifying list. As we know, it was not shortlisted. Yet another example that if anime is to be embraced, it needs...

To bring this all crashing back down to the ground... It will be a five-year race, with Ratatouille the winner. As far as I know, there will not be 15 eligible animated films released by the end of the year, which means we'll have another three-title ballot year. Ratatouille is certainly the frontr...

EricJ said: DarrenBest said: Critical opinion may have more sway than total box-office. When there is no critically adored blockbuster, than they usually give the trophy and some of the filler nominations to a much-loved art-house film. True, but even Happy Feet and Monster House were well reviewed...

Best Animated Feature Film!

The Animated Feature Film Oscar is relativelly new, but the winners show a very clear pattern: 1.) This branch of the Academy has always chosen the film with the highest combination of critical acclaim and box-office receipts, which makes perfect sense if they are giving out something that is "best ...

Wow, a lot of people here are making comments about the Academy, and it's obvious people here have no idea what they're talking about. The Prince of Egypt was only nominated in music categories because let's face it, when has an animated film been nominated for anything other than its own cat...
