Re: More Miyazaki on US Blu Ray November 14th
The Ghibli/Disney deal worked out very well for Ghibli in the end because of the added production funds that Disney provided for those Japanese films... I don't think this was ever about them selling millions of copies of their movies in the US market because realistically that problem won't happen...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Not ten, but at least twice and the soundtrack on constant repeat. Hunchback is possibly the pinnacle of the tradgital 90s Menken musical...perhaps not the best film or most entertaining movie, but certainly the one where everyone was working at the very top of their respective games. Really? Netfl...

Re: More Miyazaki on US Blu Ray November 14th
I think Disney passed on Poppy Hill because A) the main characters had an implied familial relationship that was a huge part of the film's plot and that goes into 'icky' territory Disney's family divisions won't touch; B) it's NOT a Hayao Miyazaki film and the H. Miyazaki features have probably sol...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
DWA does not below at Disney. I am the first person to say that Prince Of Egypt is "Disney Does Moses" because that's exactly what it was, at the time. But since then all those artists have found a different voice, more scrappy and streetwise, and that's since Shrek. I was watching PoE last spring ...

He added: "International performance to-date has been okay, but we are reducing our global full-run box office estimates for the film and now expect the company to book a loss on the film in the fourth quarter, unless international materially outperforms the current trajectory." What, international...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
I see your :? and I raise you :? :?: And I'll throw in a "Look, YOU were the one who fired that drive-by 'Blu 3D is dead x3' shot to explain Katz's mismanagement and DWA's other theatrical problems, quit looking around and pretending to act innocent!" :P (Again--DWA may have troubles, but a...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Nothing JK has said in recent years has worked out...3D? Half the theaters don't even bother offering it anymore, and home 3D is dead, dead, dead. The only reason Europe continues with releasing 3D discs is because the market hasn't reached a low-point yet and because it's cheaper to bung the disc ...

Also a piece on the future of movies: http://m.wsj.com/articles/dreamworks-ka ... 0?mobile=y Think that was from the beginning of the month, but darn-- I should have had money bet down that Alibi Jeff would blame Dreamworks' theatrical troubles on "Moviegoing is dead!", but he only came that close ...

Re: Criterion Collection
Looking over the list of films that they have currently set as only available on Hulu Plus at the moment, I know there are some titles on there that will eventually make their way to blu ray. I just know that Charlie Chaplin's The Kid is going to be a major blu ray release from Criterion, no chance...

Re: Official Star Wars Thread
Although I will admit I may have laughed out loud when that first storm tropper popped up out of nowhere, I thought perhaps I had stumbled upon a trailer spoof. Given the non-Australian stormtrooper and the generally grungy machinery, I'm guessing most of the story will be about the third-party fol...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
But now DWA is quickly moving down towards what it was accused of being years ago...which was of course simplistic then. Now it's not so far-fetched. :( Which pretty much emphasizes the theory that the only "good" movies they made were with talent blood-transfusions, from studios where they didn't ...

Re: Criterion Collection
In the US, most of Criterion's back-catalog is available for streaming on HuluPlus (arguably the only reason for subscribing), and can give you a taste of film-appreciation broadening, without developing the purchase addiction that I've seen happen on other Blu-ray groups. (Me, I've only ever bought...

Re: Criterion Collection
At present, there will be two animated features on the list: Watership Down in a few months and earlier there was Fantastic Mr. Fox (all Wes Anderson movies end up in the Criterion Collection, it's just a matter of when). So, we had the Depressing one, and the Snooty/Insufferably-Quirky one. Is Fan...
