I found character development to be the biggest weakness in the movie. Yeah, it's not meant to be an in-depth character study, but I didn't care for or feel any connection to any of the characters (except for Susan) like I did for the main characters in the first Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. The humans ...

I saw October Sky, and it really moved me. Very different, of course, from Vanilla Sky.

Maybe I thought it could be jumpy to some because the pacing was much faster than in the comic and some events were compressed (by necessity.) Or maybe because some characters were reduced to bit parts (like Hollis Mason/Nite Owl 1, Malcolm Long, Bernie and Bernard). I do think these cuts were neede...

Agreed with Randall here. I enjoyed the film well enough, but I kept wondering if those who hadn't read the book would find it jumpy. In fact, I was fairly impressed when one of the people I saw it with who hadn't read the comic remembered that the thin, smart guy's name was Ozymandias. I'm not what...

That's probably one of the uses. I haven't seen Rocketeer in forever, so I'll have to watch it again.

Admittedly, I am not a Horner collector, so I have not heard every version of his "danger motif," but one of the clearest examples is heard at the beginning of the Willow CD, played by brass. It appears in the Zorro scores. I don't think he uses it in Rocketeer. Regarding 300, Warner Brothers has po...

I think Film Score Monthly did an audio podcast that pointed out a lot of Horner's "borrowings." Then, of course, there is the infamous four-note "danger motif" he seems to use for every other score. I agree that what separates Horner from other composers is that he lifts passages verabatim, as oppo...

I did like the story of the Black Freighter itself. I just didn't like how it was integrated into the main story. For me, though, the pacing was slow enough that I could see the ending coming long before it happened. As for the ending of the main Watchmen story itself...that truly knocked me out.

I love the score for Krull too--more than Willow, actually. The flowing theme, trumpet fanfares, string flourishes, and pure energy of the first 5 or so minutes of the first track are giddying. Haven't seen the movie, though, and from what I've heard of it, I don't plan to.

Free Sulu action figure, eh? I'm a novice to Star Trek but I do remember Takei's distinctive voice. "Warp One....Warp Two..." Not to mention "San Francisco...I was born there." Admittedly, I don't know much about Star Trek other than the music of Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith. And that Patri...

To tell the truth, I never really liked the "Black Freighter" story in the context of the whole graphic novel. It seemed to be a little slow, and too "on the nose" in illustrating some of the parallel concepts taking place in the main story. So in a sense, I'm kind of glad that it's being done separ...

So it's not a real musical, then? No "Jedi Rocks" or "Lapti Nek"? No rapping Yoda? Too bad. Could've been the next "Shrek: The Musical." Reminds me a little of the LucasArts logos for the Rogue Squadron video games. One had stormtroopers dancing to "Cantina Band" and one had Darth Vader, Luke, Han, ...

I'm not James Horner's biggest fan, but I love the music he came up with for the Rocketeer. Each 15-note phrase of the theme is very simplistic rhythmically, yet it's still amazing. Now, if only Iron Man had had that quality of music.... Haven't seen the movie in a very long time, and don't remember...

Now, now. I thought Live Free or Die Hard was better than Die Hard 2. And no matter what you think of the Christopher Nolan Batmans, they're a hell of a lot better than Joel Schumacher's attempts. But yeah, reboots in general haven't been doing so well. The thing about the Tron sequel, though, is th...

The Prince Caspian 3-disc DVD is still so darn expensive! I managed to find the Incredible Hulk and Hellboy 2 3-discers for about 15 bucks each, but Prince Caspain is still $30-35! Heck, I paid $20 for the Blade Runner 4-disc edition at a store that often overprices DVDs. Maybe I'll wait for a used ...
