Doesn't it grind yer gears that they generally picked out the duller face-on, symmetrical expressions frames for their promotional stills? The movie appears to be something quite else.

The ingame graphics are completely cartoony, but the intro movies for all three games (well. one game and 2 expansions) are (mostly) realistic and done very well. But it could also be assumed that cartoon characters had a life outside of films; i.e. they had other jobs before becoming actors.

There's also the problem of explaining where they came from in the first place.
