So Blue Sky had been working on a Disney+ series before they were shut down which was apparently never officially announced. And it looks like it would've introduced Scrat's kid:

So, even under Disney, BlueSky would've stayed the Squirrel Studio. Better off.

That would have been so cute to see him with a kid of his own. Disappointing to say the least. :|
You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

Yeah, now Scrat is all alone again.

Love the original version of this song, but it's pretty amazing how they changed the lyrics just to express the acorns feelings. So seamless. The whole segment is brilliant, right from the start using the rock as a turntable to the end with the acorn going where the heart should be and cracking. Perfection.

More leaked footage:

Pretty impressive how much effort they put into the animatic there.

Oh, previz and animatics have gotten *very* complex in recent times. I’ve cut mock-up actions scenes made with CGI that looks better than a lot of the lower budget animated fare out there. It’s incredible, now, how much is done: whole movies get completely mapped out for timing, shots, etc, so that every one is on the same page when it comes to shooting, or for sound and editing in animation, for instance. Actually making a movie has become quite a "boring" process now, as at least 50% of the spontaneous creativity has already taken place in the precise planning!

Love the sounds effect on the animatic. So much cuteness!

I had assumed Blue Sky would transition to making straight to Disney Plus animated films, but it is what it is. Sad to see. Did you guys see it coming or was it more or less a blindside?

It wasn’t surprising, but it was still a blindside. It was surprising that Disney had, in fact, committed to BlueSky continuing under them, since it was assumed they would sell it off or close it. But they put a fair bit of promotion behind Spies In Disguise, and assured the staff that they wanted to keep going with them. Then the pandemic hit and, if there *was* as plan to close BlueSky all along, then this gave them the excuse to be able to do it.

But then they go and open up new facilities in Canada and elsewhere, like they did in the DTV days, to feed Disney+! So why not keep BlueSky going and have them also feed the D+ streaming chain? Overheads are likely an issue, but I think there’s more to all of it than meets the eye. Such a shame for the studio and fans of its films, especially those working on their last film, which could have also been a nobrainer to finish off as a D+ original. Kind of a weird choice…
