The voting for best director in a feature was judged using a selected 'clip' from each film. The Over The Hedge clip submitted was the climactic sequence featuring the "soda moment". The Cars clip for this category was Sally's explanation to Lightning McQueen of how she wound up living in Radiator Springs.

Certainly, IMO, there were other, 'stronger' scenes (from a 'directorial' standpoint) within Cars that Pixar could have submitted, instead.

But that "soda moment" sequence from OTH would have been tough to beat. It really was one of the most memorable sequences, from any feature, last year. Not to mention, the funniest! .. the audience I saw it with literally had people falling out of their seats, laughing, during that scene. And directors Tim Johnson & Karey Kirkpatrick deserve a lot of credit for that.

----------------

As for effects, yes, Cars was very deserving, but so were the other nominees. Here again, pertinent submitted clips from the films were viewed immediately before voting, so that they would be fresh in the voters' minds. I recall being particularly impressed with the 'effects' clips submitted for Flushed Away.

I liked that different movies got different awards instead of one movie running away with everything. Of course, last year things were even more mixed up but in some prior years it was one show taking everything.

I'm really happy about OTH getting best directors, and FA picking up lots of others! Yay! :D

Hey, does anyone want to talk about who they think might win some of the Oscars this year? (not just animation)

I really hope Letters from Iwo Jima wil get the Best Picture Oscar. It's such a beautiful movie. Everybody go see it! Departed is good but overrated.

And I hope Children of Men (shame it didn't get nominated for other awards) wil win the Oscar it has been nominated for. It was the best movie of last year, definitely.

No, it doesn't. ;)

I saw every movies nominated for Best Picture, and although Babel was very good, Iwo Jima is far superior to it.

this first "i claudius" of cg was inevitable. fitting for this bloated rape of the great name of McQueen.

very disappointing night.... Except for Al Gore, the rest of the awards are lame IMO. Departed was good but not as goos as the previous Scorecese and Iwo Jima definitely desserved to win. Happy Feet??? And children of Men winning nothing? Blah!
