Not really on topic, but hey, the Disney “Women in Animation” book has been brought up a few times here, so here’s an “interesting” tidbit on the new “Directing at Disney” book which covers the same era of filmmaking.

It apparently, at least according to someone on Twitter who already has the book, opens with an “apology”…
P.S. Within these pages, you will not see a lot of diversity. While today this is slowly changing, the films and the processes discussed in this book are products of their time. With hope of a more diverse group of directors in the future, we feel these stories have plenty of lessons to offer all filmmakers and historians today.

A history book apologizing for the history it portrays? Sigh. That is reeeeally overthinking things.

 indeed!

Oh dear… It's kind of even worse, and brings further attention to itself, by doing it in that "cute" PS way. Just mention it briefly within the intro as a sly nod, or…not at all! Don’t make a Thing out of it as a way to make everything all right! It’s not going to change anything or make anyone feel any better or worse about the contents!

They should have just called it The Men Of Disney Animation and been done with it, as a companion to the other book. ;)

I dislike it because it feels like it downplays the accomplishments of people from the past. It's like saying "Sure Walt Disney was great but maybe that's only because women or other minorities weren't allowed to make movies." No! There were probably others left out of the club that could have been great too if allowed to be, but that does nothing to diminish Walt's accomplishments. Calling what they were able to do with the "processes discussed...products of their time" minimizes the fact that even if women or other minorities had been allowed to participate fully, the processes and products still would have been just as impressive.

Are we still even allowed to call them the Nine Old Men now? I mean, that’s not very fair to ageing people…

Oh dear… :?

Ooh, nice to see them adding new disc titles, even if they’re of a similar genre. Still holding out hope for Cinders '15 then! ;)
