Actually, that's not quite what happened. Bluth's company went into receivership during production and the film was finished by a completion bond company. Since the final result was not fully the work of Bluth and his crew, he lobbied to have his name taken off it, which he did as director, though the film is still presented as "A Don Bluth Production". When the recent DVD was about to come out, the new people at MGM, unknowing of this production history, asked Bluth to oversee the transfer as well as the one for NIMH. Bluth did NIMH with his partner Gary Goldman, but still declined to oversee P&TP, but Goldman took them up on the offer instead, going back to get the film looking as good as it could to their original stylistic intentions.
