Best animated film of all time?

Post by James » November 17th, 2004, 1:34 am

In the story I just posted about the release of The Iron Giant, I mentioned that a lot of people consider it the best animated feature of all time. Others say Snow White, or Beauty and the Beast, or Toy Story 2, or Spirited Away. What do you guys think? And really think about it! Don't just say The Incredibles or Shrek 2 since they were the last movies you saw! We're talking best of ALL TIME!

I'm firmly in the Beauty and the Beast camp myself.

I'd say The Little Mermaid... and Toy Story... so hard, there are so many great ones.

Best of all time?

Do you realize you're not even giving a chance that some future film just MIGHT better than a film made in the past?

That's my problem with questions like this!

Maybe it's better to phrase it as, "Of all the animated films you have had the opportunity/chance to see, which is your favorite?"

Listen, I like Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and even Aladdin grew on me eventually even though I realized the first time I saw it that it WASN'T as good as Beauty & the Beast.

I've gotta go with one of the movies Walt Disney was personally involved with -- Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs.

As much as I want to say Pinocchio, the first full-length, full-color Disney feature remains the standard by which all others are judged. Besides, the only song anybody remembers from Pinocchio is "When You Wish Upon A Star." Practically every song in Snow White is a classic and memorable and actually ADVANCES a well-constructed story at the same time! You can't say that about a number of Disney films post-Aladdin...

There's only certain films you can even consider in something like this anyway. I have to break up this answer into sections to really answer.

You can only be truthful if you answer:

Best Walt era film
Best post Walt Era film
Best Pixar film
Best non disney film
Best foreign film
Best CGI film
Best stop motion film

etc.

There is just too much out there and too many genre's to really give 1 film the "best of all time" status. That's why thesesorts of questions will never have answers.

My personal animation favorite is definitely The Nightmare Before Christmas. For the time that it came out, it was brilliant. The humor, imagination, the stop motion animation are just done extremely well.

Other of my favorites are Lilo & Stitch (this movie is just too funny), A Bug's Life, the first Toy Story, and Brother Bear.

Just recently, I came across Santa -vs- the Snowman and just thought it was so funny and genius.

As you can tell, I am a huge Disney fan. I believe that Disney puts out the best animated movies out there. All of the above are not just because they are funny, but they intrigued me visually. Like the Incredibles, I found myself forgetting it was animation and was done so well for being a 2 hour long animation movie. the Polar Express just wow'd me (this was a Great Movie). As for Shark Tale, I just did not like it. I may have to see it again to make a better judgement.

Definately, Aladdin!

BTW: People, this isn't a hard question. What is your favorite Animated Film? If it has any form of animation, it is an Animated Film! If it hasn't come out yet, then it CAN'T be your favorite (even if you think it WILL be). I understand that it is hard to choose between so many, but if you have a favorite, just say it.

You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

Now that a lot of these films are available on dvd, I've been able to watch many of my favorites again, in high-quality, and re-evaluate these movies.
I've long considered The Lion King to be the best in animated films, with Beauty and the Beast right behind it. But with subsequent viewings of both films on dvd I've come the conclusion that Beauty and the Beast is, indeed, the BEST animated films ever. It has everything, and it does it flawlessly. Beautiful animation, memorable characters, unforgettable songs, and, most importantly, incredibly entertaining! It is THE best.
(Lion King is now second in my book! :) )
Do. Or do not. There is no try.
