Race to Witch Mountain
With the launch of Disney' teaser site 'Race to Witch Mountain', I was wondering what the DVD releases were like of the original films? Anybody own them?

Yes, they're great editions, if you're talking Region 1 (I don't know about R2).
Essentially, shrunk down Vault Disney releases, from two-discs to one each. Some complained at the time, but some of those two-discs did repeat or contain a lot of filler material.
That actually meant that these single discs were packed with good stuff. Truly special editions that outpace the majority of Disney's bigger films on DVD. I was also lucky enough to get both signed by director John Hough!
Look for either a repackage of these, or indeed as a two-movie set when the film is released or comes to DVD, though whether the bonus features will survive remains to be seen (probably not going by past standards).
Very recommended buys if, like me, you're a fan of these underrated movies.

Heh...
Funny thing about Witch Mountain.
I took two classes taught by the producer of those films!
Real nice guy by the name of Jerome ("Jerry") Courtland.
He acted in a few Disney films/TV shows before becoming a producer. I don't what live-action films he acted in, but he's the narrator and singer behind the stop-motion "Noah's Ark" film Disney did in the 1950s.
Courtland got tips on producing from Walt Disney himself before he left to work at other studios. ("Disney was a great place to work at," he said, "but they didn't pay as well as the other studios!" <== A sentiment that still exists to these days...)

I was very impressed with AnnaSophia Robb in Bridge To Terabithia and Dwayne Johnson comes over well here too...looks fun, in an over the top Bruckheimer way, and nothing like the original.
But as a hyper, flashy, wisecracking modern blockbuster version of the same book, it should do well...it looks smart.

Also the elaborately immersive "Vault Disney" menus (going down the 200 ft. elevator into a CGI Vault the size of Ft. Knox"), that Disney dropped after the first wave of live-action classics--Ben wrote:Yes, they're great editions, if you're talking Region 1 (I don't know about R2).

I'll assume they were the first casualty of the 1-disk versions?

It looks good. They're definitely going for a more humorous take on the story by casting Dwayne Johnson. Still, he's been good in the comedies he's been in. Hopefully they will focus more on the adventure aspects though and not too much on comedy.Daniel wrote:Here's the trailer spot that will debut during the Super Bowl. Pretty cool.
