What a terrible and misleading headline! Makes it seem they had another Artemis Foul on their hands, when really it was the lack of audiences turning up that made their decision; another reason they should have held back: there was a lot of pent-up anticipation for this film. Even people that didn’t like it said they’d wished they could see it on the big screen.

We can call Mulan how NOT to handle a mega-budget $200 million would-be blockbuster:

But seriously, someone at Disney must've known better than to include all of those "thank yous" during the end credits. They've would've had to be able to guess this might lead to terrible press. Now it's being stopped in its tracks--ironically--in the very nation it was trying to please.

I had heard $275m at the weekend, which is great! For Disney! But absolutely no-one else.

Certainly a win for Disney in the sense that, pretty much at this point, they're turning a profit. Probably won't be a huge profit when all is said an done, but enough to consider the experiment a success.

Until Disney releases “official” numbers, I’m taking all of this with a grain of salt.

Disney's next investors meeting is on October 7th, which is when we might hear about Mulan's numbers.

People are now reporting the numbers are wrong and the film made alot less then that report on disney plus! We will find out for sure in a few weeks at disneys meeting. Then we should know the numbers.

In big screen release news in china has dropped over 72% from last week from deadline!

Because one of their OWN movies, "The Eight Hundred", continued to be a bigger draw!
Gasp!...Is this an indication that China continues to like its own big-budget history epics better than big custom-crafted CGI foreign blockbusters??
Next, you'll be saying they liked "The Wandering Earth" better than the new Star Wars films!!

Star wars was never big in china. That's marvel and fatf. Thing is star wars was not made with china as one of it's big targets. Mulan was. They aimed it at china big time.

Disney wanted a hit in china and dolittle made number one but mulan didn't! Ouch!

Also american films have beat china films in china at the box office.

Well it also had to get over that whole "boycott Mulan" thing in the region too, which didn’t help...

It's a Communist country--Never underestimate cutesy non-political wisecracking CGI animals in fantasy settings.

Yahoo says not so fast. More like between $60 to $90m on plus!
Data gathered this weekend appeared to hold seismic news for Hollywood—specifically Disney. A report from Yahoo suggested that a shocking 9 million Disney+ users had streamed the studio’s Mulan remake in its first 12 days of release, translating into a gross of $261 million. That’s a staggering number for an on-demand rental and for an industry that’s been struggling through pandemic-related cinema closures. If Disney can make that kind of money without American theaters, does it need American theaters at all?

he only problem is, Mulan didn’t actually make $261 million in 12 days. Yahoo had misinterpreted numbers from an analytics firm that estimated Mulan’s viewership, and the firm’s co-founder clarified that grosses were more likely $60 million to $90 million—well below the movie’s reported budget of $200 million. Not only does it seem that Mulan made modest sums in the United States (though Disney has yet to release official numbers), but the movie also had a disappointing theatrical rollout in China. Another grand experiment by Hollywood in the COVID-19 era, another flop. As the end of 2020 draws near, studios still haven’t figured out a sustainable way to bring their most expensive blockbusters to audiences.
