Weirdest year ever.

Good Animated Noms though, nice to see a good mix (even if no anime). Yes, no Croods 2, because it was pretty awful. Interesting to see if the Pixar vote gets split.

Soul is going to have the current social climate giving it the edge over Onward. Regardless, it’s a fantastic year for Pixar, and people can stop talking about them having a “slump” already.

But this may be the first year in ages that I choose not to watch the ceremony. Apart from Mank and maybe Chicago 7, I’m not particularly interested in any of the BP nominations in a “gotta rush out and watch them ASAP” kind of way.

But hey, Emma was a good movie, so it’s nice it got a nod.

And you thought you didn't see the obscure indie nominees the years they DID play theaters!
Yes, no Croods 2, because it was pretty awful. Interesting to see if the Pixar vote gets split.
Well, being awful didn't stop Over the Moon...

And the Pixar split should be interesting, but predictable, since we know that the Coco Factor ("I remember MY grandma! ") will play more for the anemic Soul with the hard-to-like characters, than for the pleasantly standard Onward with the likable characters that didn't milk the "dad" stuff effectively.

Mank has a very different meaning over here, and I’m sorry to say that’s how I also felt it applied to this film. Love Kane, love Fincher, love the idea, but I just couldn’t crack it, and I know I’m not the only one. There is somewhat understanding but also deep surprise at the whopping ten noms it’s picked up, though already talk is that it’ll be one of those much nom'd films that comes away empty or light handed on the night.

My initial response to the noms were just give the golden man to Glenn Close and Diane Warren (at this stage I'm all for people with lots of nominations and no win getting a career/enough is enough award), they've waited long enough. But I will need to sit down and start thinking like an Academy voter to make my actual picks.
