The first Smurfs/Village was Sony, wasn't it, after Sony kept hoping they'd have a new Sony Animation house-icon?

The sandy spongebob movie netflix grabbed is getting a limited big screen release according to box office mojo. My guess is a few cities showing for a week to count for oscars.

"The smurfs movie".

"The film will see the Smurfs going on an “interdimensional adventure” to discover the power within and answer the universal question: “What is a Smurf?”

“We’re thrilled that Rihanna is on board to voice Smurfette and write, produce and perform original songs for the film,” De Wilde added."

Hm.
Rihanna. Okay. Too bad it's only her voice. Beautiful girl.
Smurfs in the real world, again.
Influencer Smurf.
It only took about 5 seconds for someone to smurf his pants.
Uncle Smurf?

I'm not the target audience, of course, but... Looks okay.

"SpongeBob films are interestingly theatrical movies in China. Sandy’s film grossed $4.4 million USD. Plankton’s film opens March 8th."

Well, it *is* a European franchise to begin with, so I guess there’s the built-in nostalgia as well, where the brand and Peyo is till very much revered. And of course video and streaming these films do extremely well on, so it should have some little blue legs yet. :)
