"This Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 2 update is promising, though it is also not a guarantee that the sequel will actually get made, as projects stall out while in development all the time."

Hope it does. I liked the original. It was nice to be exited for Pokémon again.

It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't quite the smash demographic hit Warner envisioned it to be.
When we get unexplained sequels years later, there's the smell of "Never greenlight a sequel on Thursday" project that's about to lose its production option.

Mario movie getting huge hype, last of us broke records, uncharted did great and getting a second film, both sonic films did well and third in the works, Mortal kombat did well enough to get a second film. Grand turismo movie coming out, Tomb raiders show announced. It takes two, pac-man, tetris and other films in the works.

Think it's more "video games are big in hollywood right now and wait we have a game ip let's use it" than anything else.

Remember after batman 89 came out all those unmade comic ips studios had started getting made like dick tracy, phantom and the shadow!

Will Smith in talks to play villain:
Giant Freakin Robot wrote: For the first time in an Oscar-winning acting career spanning three decades, the Fresh Prince may finally play the bad guy. Our trusted and proven sources tell us that Will Smith is in talks to play the villain of the upcoming Detective Pikachu 2. Early in March, Deadline reported Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia) would direct the sequel and that Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer) would be writing the script.

Assuming the negotiations go well and Will Smith signs on to Detective Pikachu 2, this would be a career first for the Bad Boys star. In over three decades of acting, Smith has never played a villain — at least not in the sense of an actual antagonist. Probably the closest he’s ever come is his cameo as Lucifer in the 2014 romantic fantasy Winter’s Tale; but while as Lucifer he’s certainly not a good guy, he’s also not the film’s antagonist.
Something something slap joke...

Please no.

He’s obviously been woken up to what Jim Carrey's been doing lately… ;)
