Ferngully sold off again to another studio! Plans new movies!

Post by gaastra » November 30th, 2023, 9:17 am

Disney sells it to shout and now shout sells it to another studio. Poor ferngully. Ripped off by avatar and sold over and over like no one wants it!

New studio looks like does want it and plans to bring ferngully back with new things. ferngully 3? Remake? Live action?

Thus the conundrum of independent film and their often orphaned rights situations.

Usually a large company will eventually own them and keep hold, but Disney obviously didn’t want to pay out more to acquire all remaining rights from the Australian copyright holders — and understandably so — meaning the originators had little choice but to go with someone else if they wanted even a smidgen of further exploitation from their IP.

Unfortunately it sounds like this is another independent, so they will be relying on a bigger studio — if it happens — or could end up being out in the wild again. A shame, for what was an inoffensive addition to the 90s Disney knock-off wannabes.
