It's VERY kiddie. I'll stick with the 80s version, which is also on D+.

Ugh..either way, I won’t ever get around to watching it, but it’s nice to know Firestar hasn’t been totally forgotten! ;)

I absolutely don’t get the point of that new show.

I watched one ep out of curiosity. Each ep only runs a few minutes. That was plenty for me, but I guess it's okay for small fry. Though, even as a kid, I'm not sure I would ever go for today's preschool stuff. It just seems so patronizing, generally. Stuff like Sesame Street never talked down to kids.

At least not until Elmo tried to copy the Nick Jr. "Blue's Clues" fourth-wall formula, and took over half the show.

Nowadays, preschool cable doesn't seem to have caught on that Dora the Explorer talking to Nick Jr. viewers was intentionally supposed to imitate an interactive CD-Rom, and while characters talking to the viewers engage the kids (Mister Rogers knew that), it's also a cheaper formula compared to good narrative shows on Disney+ like the late Sophia the First.

Don’t feel too bad. Free Guy actually dropped here on Wednesday, so we gave it a go last night, and…

It’s a very strange film, varying between being wildly entertaining and being very bland and disappointing, with lots of set up on set up after set up that kept going nowhere, and more than a few gags that I felt were misguided and misplaced in a film that Disney has been doing that cross-brand thing with where it’s a 20th Century film, but Disney seem happy to have their name associated with it too, weirdly for a film with at least two adult verbal moments, including a close to a pedophile joke, and at least one f-bomb, which felt cheap.

A confusing and frustrating film, it *is* nonetheless entertaining, though slightly "off" and full of stuff that isn’t WTF? in a fun random way, but just in a "what is literally going on with that" way, with a bunch of other lazy other franchise gags: a Marvel moment that was admittedly something of a surprise (even if it should have had the Cap theme instead of The Avengers) is followed up by a too-similar Star Wars one (where the music sadly sounds really slow and lackluster) — as if they couldn’t decide which to have so why not use both — but ultimately just felt too throwaway and cheap to me.

VFX are largely good, but there are a handful or more of *really* shoddy shots that stick out badly, mostly concerning the "evil Guy" Dude character that sometimes looks good but mostly just feels so wrong and is yet another element to this film that takes a long long time to set up and build something coming, only for it be gone or lose its reason for being just a few moments later.

Another script pass would have infinitely helped on this: it gets so close to being an all-round family fun pleaser but misses it entirely by throwing in too much that doesn’t stick, and even Taika Waititi's villain witticisms seem borrowed wholesale from other places. Ultimately I probably won’t be getting this on disc: it’ll be on D+ if I want to see it again…

For those without Star, it’ll probably eventually end up on Hulu (or D+ by the time Disney get around to just rebranding everything!) once rights and things run their course. While I’d say you’re not missing *much*, it’s still worth a watch, caveat emptor…

I had heard that part of Free Guy had filmed in my old ex-hometown of Worcester MA only after the movie was released, and looking at the poster on the disc cover, double-took "Egad, that IS Main Street! "

I caught Free Guy over the weekend. Oddly enough not on Disney+ but our Py TV provider and it was free. I didn't realise it was available on Aussie Disney+ after the fact when my friend said she was watching it and she doesn't have Pay TV. I enjoyed it (although maybe as a non-gamer I didn't get all the references and cameos) but I felt they should have taken a little more time in setting up living in a computer game before they had Guy go off code. That was quite rushed for me. Or maybe I was expecting this to be a bit more Truman Show than what they had in mind. I think it would have been more surprising (for those around him) if we saw how repetitive it is for an NPC in a game before he went off code chasing a person who was humming Mariah.

Also, the movie made me realise that Ryan Reynolds really is becoming Will Ferrell with his comedy schtick. It's a decent movie worth checking out but I also won't be shocked if someone said they haven't watched it. I still think Wreck-It Ralph poked fun at computer games better.

Although, to be fair, for anyone that knows me, I’d be off chasing a person humming Mariah too. Especially vintage Mariah! ;)

Agree with everything you said, particularly the Reynolds shtick. He could have literally been Deadpool any number of times during the film, and a lot of those moments were the ones I found the most obvious and of the "yeah, get on with it please" kind. And with a couple of those "jokes" trimmed or softened down, this could have been a Disney movie, even if they kept the 20th branding. It’s clear why they went with 20th, but it’s a little concerning how, over here at least, they are not keeping the Disney logo away from it and making it look much more family friendly than it is (not that it isn’t, really, but it isn’t either). So weird.

Incidentally, Free Guy is also this month's Disney Movie Club selection.

I wouldn’t exactly say "inappropriate", but there’s definitely some blurring of what is "Disney", or not, there… :?

You know, even for "free" I just can’t seem to muster any enthusiasm for Black Widow…! :(
