Re: Looney Tunes Golden/Platinum Collections

Post by Ben » March 30th, 2023, 3:56 pm

Caught this yesterday and meant to post, so thank# for the catch!

Very good news. Looks like the age of megasets is over, so it’ll be smaller releases like these that hope to fill the gaps. At least we get twice as many ("twice as many!") shorts here than Disney dares to share on their Mickey &… volumes, and hopefully little to no repeats, unless they’re updated restos. But George knows what he’s doing and who these discs are for…!

Supposedly it will also include shorts never released on DVD!

Oops…sorry, that’s what I meant above. The majority will be new to disc completely, and mostly at least all new to Blu, and "hopefully little to no repeats" meant that repeats should be very few and far between. :)

Nice that they're moving it to the Archive:
Up till now, Warner was trying to sell Looney as a House Brand, meaning they would crumble when a release didn't sell in mass retail, or they couldn't link it in with Space Jam.

Now, Hanna-Barbera has taught them that their vintage-toon fan bread is buttered on the online Archive audience, so they don't have to wait for "Anniversaries"--or Funko Pops--like the Bugs 80th box that didn't thematically have room for other characters.

Beanstalk Bunny! Sounds promising so far.
Odds my bodkins!

And "A Tale of Two Mice", the first of the Babbitt & Mousetello cartoons (although "The Mouse-Merized Cat" will probably be held back for Past Objectionable Depictions, ie. a Rochester joke).

From the cover, looks like we get a Three Bears cartoon also, and since "A Bear For Punishment" has been done to death, could it be "The Bee-Deviled Bruin"?

Possibly. My money is on "What's Brewin', Bruin?" since that's their first solo outing and it hasn't seen a release since the LaserDisc days.

There are still slightly over 100 LT & MM shorts which were released on Laserdisc, but are not yet available on DVD or Blu-ray.

This comes from a list I'd compiled almost ten years ago, of LT & MM cartoons on Laserdisc that remain unreleased on DVD or Blu-ray.

I had to prune out several that've seen release, since then! It's possible I might've missed a few; feel free to let me know, if that's the case.

Even so .. this list now stands at nearly 200 cartoons; twice as many as I'd thought! :o

That is awesome. I started a project years ago to create a database of classic cartoon shorts, with all of their home video releases. I got as far as getting done Disney, Fleischer, Van Beuren, Ub Iwerks, and just under half the WB cartoons before life got in the way. Sadly, the database program I used was part of Microsoft Works, which used a database file format no longer supported, though I can still convert the files I have into spreadsheets; but I liked the database better. I may yet complete my project, though of course there are now online resources that are pretty good, like the amazing Looney Tunes Wiki.
https://looneytunes.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page

Your list is still a little out of date, though. At a glance, the Sniffles cartoons are on the Mouse Chronicles set; The Pest That Came to Dinner is on Porky's LT Super Stars DVD; and Duxorcist is on the Space Jam 2-disc DVD, the Parodies DVD, The Essential Daffy Duck, and of course in truncated form in Quackbusters. I checked just a few others, and there are still many surprising omissions, like Beanstalk Bunny and Boston Quackie. Naturally, very few black and white cartoons have appeared on DVD or Blu-ray, while there are lots on the LD box sets.

So, there are still tons of cartoons not yet on 5" discs. The Stars of Space Jam series did get a disc release in the UK, so that covers a few more titles. But this all makes me very glad that I still have ALL the Looney Tunes laserdiscs you mentioned, plus a Japanese box set that has a bunch more. https://looneytunes.fandom.com/wiki/Jap ... LaserDiscs I got many of the single discs from Columbia House Laserdisc club as my initial sign-up, for, I think, $1.99 each!

Ah, those were the days!

"Cinderella Meets Fella" is on Gold Diggers in Paris DVD, "Cross-Country Detours" on Virginia City DVD, "Daffy Doodles" on My Reputation DVD and "Honeymoon Hotel" on Footlight Parade DVD/Blu-ray. I'll stop before I get carried away! ;)

WBHV did have a maddening tendency to place somewhat random cartoons as 'bonus features' on various movies! These were often not 'restored' nor 'remastered' in any way .. but it still 'counts' as being on DVD. :)

.. and I had totally blanked/forgotten about the Mouse Chronicles set .. which gives me a great excuse to go buy it now.

Despite it getting the blame for singlehandedly "killing" LT DVD sets at Warner, Mouse Chronicles has enough to recommend it:
Yes, we get more Sniffles than Chuck Jones should have ever made, but it does include his satirical "talkative" deconstructions in What's Brewin' Bruin? and Hush My Mouse.

As if the set already wasn't worth buying alone for the Complete Hubie & Bertie, and "The Mouse That Jack Built".
