The Mouse quite literally sitting on the Mouse…

I may have left a letter out of one of those words… ;)

I like to imagine this is their response to the "Steamboat Willie" public domain situation. Even with limitations, we'll probably see a few Steamboat Mickey's, although no where near as bad as Pooh.

But isn't just the short going to pd not mickey himself? We have 2 mickey shorts in pd for decades already and you can't make new mickey cartoons from them without getting sued same as you can't make new popeye or bugs bunny cartoons as both have pd cartoons.

There's been rumors for years that Universal's terms were that the rights to the film/character would revert back to Marvel after 15 years. It's almost 15 years to the day since the film was released so looks like those rumors might have been correct.

I do note, though, the lack of Marvel logo on the title, which is usually part of the logo thesedays. Like the Sony Spideys, maybe this is just an indication they have reached a rights agreement for the first film, even if they will own the character outright soon?

I know there was an MCU-branded box of the two Universal Hulk films once before, and that they had the joint film in their MCU collections, so there's obviously some joint rights sharing already established. Maybe as with some other stream shares that companies seem to be doing (like Indy on D+ as well as Paramount), there’s a more sensible way for studios to share rights they own so that everyone wins.

And Hulk smash, natch. :)

That's very very possible! It would be a strange coincidence though that people were predicting back in 2021 that Disney would regain the rights to Hulk in June 2023, and that's the exact date the movie finally comes to D+.

I think it's likely whatever people found in the contracts back in 2021, had some factor in this. Whether that's full rights, or just release rights, or even just an option to ask for permission to use... something was probably in there with a June 2023 date.

Yeah, probably. But getting the rights back to the character and getting the rights to a film are very different things. And if they had rights to the character I can imagine Marvel making a much, much bigger big things out of that. My guess is that Universal just agreed to Marvel having certain ancillary rights after a set period. Unless they go the whole hog and ask Comcast what it wants for all Hulk rights in addition to Hulu when they get around to that deal…! ;)

Not to be that grumpy kind of "okay that’s a start but it’s not enough" fan, but still odd we don’t get 100 shorts for 100 years (planning, guys, planning!). And Plane Crazy could do with a proper cleanup. I ran the Treasures version a few weeks back and was amazed and disappointed at how beat up it looked.

Nice news for these shorts, though — and being done by the Cinderella and Snow White team! Some odd choices of some fairly flat cartoons, but also a few gems in there too.
