Might hold off. I usually like to save something like that for after the movie, although that's usually when they drop on the same day. A Pixar film back in theaters feels so foreign!

With Top Gun, Jurassic and Lightyear, many cinemas are proclaiming that "movies are back". Despite the fact that Covid is far from over (figures are rising here again at least), these massive tentpoles back on big screens and making big money again so quick after each other means that you can’t but help think they may have something of a point…

With Top Gun, Jurassic and Lightyear, many cinemas are proclaiming that "movies are back".

No, they're not "back", because they're still the pre-pandemic 10s problem of studios trying to revive or high-school-reunion old 80's-90's house-brand properties from When Movies Were Better.

When "Free Guy" was opening well in pandemic theaters, one industry article interviewed execs and writers about whether it was possible that we'd ever SEE another old-fashioned solo middle-tier comedy, action, drama or rom-com that wasn't part of a corporate studio Five-Year Crossover Universe Franchise Strategy, and most, sadly, weren't hopeful about the prospects.
One writer even referred to Reynolds' comedy as "Probably the last helicopter out of Saigon..."

Yeah…they’re back. Three huge summer tentpoles stacked up on top of each other like the old days, and more to come. The height of the pandemic saw one would be blockbuster tryout appear only every two or three months! This is not like those times.

Sony marvel movies like venom and spider-man and universals incredible hulk plus the non disney owned muppet films and other sony family films and shows and a new hub "more entertainment" for adult stuff for countries without star coming to disney plus--everywhere but america! They told us to jump in a lake. Darn streaming copyrights.

That's more the current "Golden Age of TV" fallacy, ie. that by a flood of streaming services giving us MORE of something, it's therefore BETTER.

As opposed to the usual criteria of whether a significant percentage of what we do get is critically and artistically better than it used to be, or whether we care about it more than we used to.

Blockbuster tentpoles and rock-concert opening-weekend hype do not a "golden age of movies" make, in fact, they're one of our biggest cancers to cure at the moment if we want to heal the patient.

Summer tentpoles, as you well know, have never been about quality, it’s all about the hype. Lightyear opens this week, marking the third tentpole in a row to still all be out at the same time. That hasn’t happened in two years.
