Really? Wow. And I've never seen any of them, even the original - though I saw a live version once. It did not inspire me to see the film.

I can understand cheap soulless Warner-created Broadway-tourist musicals creating that impression, but you should see the original, since it's got the Jean Shepherd script, and Darrin McGavin. I liked the movie in theaters long before Ted Turner hypnotized a generation into liking it on cable.

There's a soulless direct-video Warner creation claiming to be a "sequel", but it's not the genuine article, which would be "A Summer Story"/"It Runs in the Family" with Charles Grodin.

(And even though ACS was on Warner's Next-New-Franchise list, I thought they'd just take their lumps with the direct-video, but no, it's 20's Warner, and we have to have the Old Actor Reunions.)

I have tried and tried and tried since the original came out in, what, '83?, and I just can’t plug into A Christmas Story. In fact I think I found it unlikable every time I’ve tried to watch it again since. Naturally I’ve never bothered with any of the "sequels", especially since as with so many other series, it seams there really is only one A Christmas Story, like The Land Before Time. I will try it again sometime, but I won’t be anticipating this new one any more than any of the others.

What’s that, though? Charles Grodin, you say…?

Ah, aka It Runs In The Family, it seems. Didn’t know about that. Not in a rush, but I’ll keep an eye out, as I like me some Grodin.

Maybe it’s American nostalgia, but the original is a huge classic for us. Never seen or cared about the sequels. Hopefully they can recapture something here, with Billingsley reprising the role and maybe more importantly producing. If he could rope his producing buddy Jon Favreau in it maybe could really be something.

The Americana of it certainly plays in, which is odd for me as I usually plug into that immensely. I’ll be up for trying yet again before the sequel, although the Grodin film does appeal as a fan of his.

But where's number eight in the original run, above? It goes from seven to nine…!?
