Re: Best of the 2010s Poll

I’m as surprised as anyone, since I only just about liked the first and hated the second one. But Martin Short is heartbreaking in it, it has some amazingly directed action sequences, and the humour is actually smart-funny, as opposed to being just smart-alecky funny. And the rendering still stands up from the time. End of the day, looking back on the list, I just had a great time with that film and although I’ve only seen it maybe twice since it first came out, it sticks in my mind as being a real good time.

(And it’s better than MU) :P

M3 would seem to be the outlier in that list.

M3 over HTTYD. Interesting. ;)

I did enjoy M3, actually, and do approve of all Ben's other top 10 choices too.

From his top 15: Still not feeling Storks, though. And Toy Story 4 over 3? Hm. Interesting.

Storks was just a crazy film, as was Trolls, actually, both were just good time movies, but ultimately had little substance. The Dragons were good, but the series was one of diminishing returns and, without really seeing the new one too many times, kind of muddied my memory of that one too. M3 stuck with me more probably precisely because I wasn’t so crazy about the first two!

TS4..yes, three was a perfect series capper, but it basically replayed so many — too many — "best of" elements from the first two. The first opened with a western play scene, the second opened with a sci-fi play scene, so the third opens with a western-sci-fi play scene. Lotso is largely the prospector again. Their backstory, sans a sad song, is tonally the same as Jessie's. And we get a giant conveyor belt again. So, for me, TS3 is a re-run of past glories, topped off by two awesome endings (the look of the toys' faces in the incinerator, Andy saying goodbye). That TS4 could actually be worth making, and watching, at all, makes it a great surprise, and that it went so far off in mostly new directions puts it ahead of the repeatable third. Making us question the whole conceit of the entire world itself, and paying off Woody's story for the lead character's actual sake and not just a nice bow-tie for the audience — but improbably ending up doing both — easily makes it a better series capper than what we would have been left with had the third been the last film. And it looks freaking amazing!

Well, I cannot fault your reasoning. The rest is a matter of personal taste.

I feel with Storks like Ben feels with Cars. I just couldn't get into the whole concept. Just seemed weird and didn't work for me.

I did not enjoy Toy Story 4 so much. Breaking up the band made sense story-wise, but I need a TS5 now to show a reunion. :)

Interesting!

Neat to see the #1 pick NOT be Oscar nominated! That's crazy!

Brave is on the list? Blech. But, to each his/her own. ;)

Nice to see Ghibli, Laika and Cartoon Saloon get some love, even they didn't crack my personal Top 10. Those films are all deserving.

The Top 10 are pretty mainstream, but I can't argue with those choices, either.

Give Brave another chance Rand. We ran it for Paddy's day last year and it was much better than I remembered, and I actually wound up really enjoying it. It did almost make my personal choice too, believe it or not!

The top of final list it pretty studio/blockbuster heavy, but then what else are you going to get when it’s a popular vote poll. Like you I was glad to see the independents get mentions at least, but the biggest surprise for me was...Winnie The Pooh!?

Winnie The Pooh.

Seriously, Winnie The Pooh makes this list...

(I won’t continue) ;)

Just rewatched MU today to see if I was really so wrong about it. Nope! It's actually better than I remembered and maybe even one of the best unplanned prequel movies I've ever seen! If you get a chance I'd urge you to definitely give it another chance.

Brave was the highest ranked movie that got zero first place votes. It did, however, have the second most third place votes which propelled it so high.

Similarly, only five movies had more second place votes than Winnie the Pooh. (In fact Pooh had more second place votes than Brave!)

(cough)Anomalisa beat Storks(cough, cough) ;) ;) ;)

But MU beat Mad 3, so all is okay. Surprising what got pretty highly ranked, though.
