Drive In Movies Making A Big Comeback!

Post by gaastra » May 17th, 2020, 9:44 am

Looks like drive ins are making a huge comeback!

Showing movies.

Singers are now using them to do concerts!

People are having weddings at them with the big screen livestreaming at families homes who can't go!

Events can be booked there also.

Classic films like back to the future and batman 89 are getting shown as well.

Having monster and horror events.

New ones are now getting built! (really!)

Looks like a farmer has turned one of their fields into a drive-in and it's a hit.

We have one 20 min from here! Hmm.

Also looks like they can livestream like fathom events type films at them now!

Someone should tell fathom events that.

We've got a couple at woodsy picnic areas, since all you need is a parking area, space, and a couple billboards.
The old tinny speakers have been replaced by FM and Bluetooth, so there's no need for the old concrete seas of the 50's (along the outside strip of town, where the real estate was more valuable for shopping malls and indoor cineplexes); people can bring their own radios, and families sit out on the lawn with a blanket, mosquitos permitting. You'd think more woodsy suburbs would go for a cheap option for local summer business.

(Let alone that they're already becoming popular again in year-round CA and Texas.)

My town did one with E.T and it was a success. They plan to do another with Back to the Future.

City next to us is opening a drive in! First film is a free showing of wonder woman!

So that's now two drive ins right near our city! Crazy.

Don't think there's a drive-in near me. Google shows nothing and haven't heard anything. Oh well.

I love the dumb people over here who haven’t been brought up with the Drive-In experience - it was never a Thing in the UK - who keep referring to them as Drive-Thru Cinemas!

I just keep getting this hilarious image of cars running riot and smashing through the screen! Or maybe they’re just trying to get back to 1885? ;)

Thanks, Ben! I needed that! :) :)

You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

You're probably just remembering "Dead-End Drive-In", that staple of Ozploitation history:

Movies are planning to open up soon. Let's see if drive ins can still hang on.

Even with some states allowing theatres to open, there is still the question of what will be playing on those screens. I think the drive-ins will do well over the summer.
