Whippet Angel wrote: Skinner wanted to keep his job, and make as much profit from it as possible.
Actually, Skinner was supposed to be "the" villain until the switch of directors, upon which Anton Ego turned out to be the "villain".
(And he gets the quote-marks for turning out to be a nice guy, too...)

Think it was either Pixar's laid-back storytelling, Lasseter's general hippie-ism about "good" and "bad" responsibilities--or else trying to get as far away as possible from Jeff K.'s infantile "Take that, bad person!" dogpiling upon Ratcliffe and Gaston--that moved Pixar away from good-vs.-evil conflicts...

Walt, OTOH, knew that stories not only had to have Good vs. Evil, but that it was necessary to a good story that Evil didn't play around...Otherwise, what respect would we have for the hero?

it doesn't have to be as black and white as good and evil

As good as Pixar films are I do think they could benefit from having stronger villains. Although Hopper was just excellent, as said above.

I do hope we see a return to a real sense of evil in upcoming films, both in Disney, DreamWorks and Pixar. In many ways it makes for a deeper movie.

In reference to 90s era Disney villains, they may have been a bit over the top here and there but they certainly projected real malice in some scenes, especially Gaston, Scar, even Skyes in O & C. (how does it get worse than almost choking someone with your limousine window and then kidnapping a little girl? His "death by subway car" scene is indeed the right dramatic payoff.)
You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

The best, most wickedly evil characters are those made up by many shades of gray...

Auto reminds me of the MCP from Tron and Syndrom I just wanted to say is the lamest Pixar baddie (Espically in the part after Mr. Incredible gets captured)
I"m glad that the ending made sure he won't come back,he's dead alright.
