TRON Sequel is A-GO... Gets new director

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 1706799643

"TORONTO -- Commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct "Tron," described as "the next chapter" of Disney's 1982 cult classic. Sean Bailey is producing via the Live Planet banner, as is Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film.

Kosinski, who last month signed on to helm the remake of "Logan's Run" for Warner Bros. Pictures, will oversee the visual development of the project and have input on the script, which is being written by "Lost" scribes Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Story details are being kept secret..."

********************

It's finally happening, guys.

Don't know how much difference this'll make as the last TRON came out 25 years ago and, since then, a little film series called the Matrix Trilogy has pretty much covered the same ground.

People don't care that TRON came first and that The Matrix retread the same basic ground. The Matrix (1998)was a much bigger hit and some who don't know better will assume the TRON sequel is the "rip-off"!

I was just writing about this for the front page tomorrow...I'm jazzed for one thing.

Glad to see Lisberger involved, and he has his other project on the go too, which can be no bad thing for him.

I wouldn't say it's finally happening until we get a script - at least - Kosinski has another whole movie to complete first before he even turns his attention to Tron.

I love TRON so the fact that we're finally getting the long-rumored sequel is fantastic news. I just hope they keep the original title: TRON 2.0. Kind of grabs ya, doesn't it?

It does, I'm just not sure they'll use it since the video game sequel already has that name.

Here's some story details about Tron the sequel, be warned though as it contains spoilers. And no talky about the site. ;)

Sounds awesome! Too bad we have to wait two more years, though. If they had something to show at Comic Con already, you'd think they'd be done sooner. Oh well.

Alan Bradley's back too? Sounds like they may de-age them to do the earlier opening scenes...

Man, I'm starting to get jazzed. Maybe THIS will be the franchise reboot that succeeds where Superman, Die Hard, Indy and countless others have not only failed but fallen flat into the mud.

END OF LINE. ;)

Now, now. I thought Live Free or Die Hard was better than Die Hard 2. And no matter what you think of the Christopher Nolan Batmans, they're a hell of a lot better than Joel Schumacher's attempts. But yeah, reboots in general haven't been doing so well.

The thing about the Tron sequel, though, is that if it fails, it has a lot less farther to fall. Not that I despise the original. (I'm reminded of Brad Bird's comment at the Human History of Computer Animation panel: "Hey, don't laugh! Tron has its place!")

Tron: Legacy

Post by Dan » July 22nd, 2009, 12:06 am

A number of online media people were woken up this morning by FedEx folks, delivering them mysterious packages.

Inside the packages contained a generic looking flashdrive and two coin tokens.

The media people immediately investigate what was contained in the flashdrive. Stored within was a single animated gif.

Turns out, each media person had coded messages that were different from each other. After some code analysis, it was discovered that the messages basically read "Flynn Lives" and contained the following web sites:

http://www.flynnlives.com/

http://homeoftron.com/

On the Flynn Lives site, there is a crawling spider at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the spider opens a new window that reveals a countdown. The countdown ends on Thursday, July 23 at 9:30pm PST.

Some of the media people then began to investigate the package boxes themselves. The return address read as such:

c/o Flynn Lives Organization
PO Box # 236
611 K Street #B
San Diego, CA 92101

On the map, it's just a block or two away from the San Diego Convention Center. Where earlier in the day, Steve Lisberger will be on hand to present 3D footage of Tron 2 as part of the Disney 3D panel.

It is speculated that Tron fans head over to the address at 9:30pm on Thursday where the next phase in the Tron viral campaign will take place. Some believe that this might end up becoming the new location of Flynn's Arcade.

Love those coin tokens. I have such big hopes for this. Gotta keep them to relatively reasonable levels...

Funny thing. After reading this and looking at the websites, I had a dream about this last night. I dreamed I was there and they ran a 3D trailer for the movie (with glasses provided) and, in my dream at least, it was very cool. I'll be very interested to hear what actually goes down tonight. If anyone happens to be there, please let us know.

That seems to fit in with the "Son of Flynn" (and "Revenge of Clu") storylines that have been floating the web...
Promising a sequel that's going to try and "pick up where they left off" as much as possible.

That was awesome! Just as any good teaser should, it gives you just enough to look cool without giving anything away. And it's coming out next year! That's a year earlier than they originally said! Yay! There's not much that I would pay extra to see in 3D, but for this one, I definitely will.
