Bloom County from July 15, 1983 (part of a week-long storyline in which Binkley has a Star Wars-themed dream)

Breathed's annotation/commentary for this strip in the Bloom County: The Complete Library hardcover collection reads:
Berke Breathed wrote:I was off by one year. Funny thing, looking back, is that George Lucas apparently did lose his head.

So to sort of get this thread back on topic, here's the video announcement for Merida and Maleficent.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I do like the cute angular style of the figurines. :)

I actually bought the 'Anna' and 'Elsa' figs when they were released last Christmas .. just to place on my desk at home. Strangely, I have never seen either character on store shelves, since; thanks to Frozen-mania, they seem to be perpetually 'sold out.'

Do the figures work as standalones? Because honestly I've been wanting Rapunzel and Vanelope, among others, but have worried that there might be a "plug" at the bottom that keeps them from really being useable.

Yes, Dacey .. the figurines' bases are perfectly flat on the bottom.

Apparently, just placing the figurine in direct contact with the stand is all that's required to use them in the game; there's no 'plug' of any sort.

It's kinda like Skylanders in that you need to purchase the core game set. In Series One, that's the game, the game stand that plugs into the system, and comes with Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow, and Sully along with the playset for Incredibles, Pirates, and Monsters University.

The game stand has three spots to place figures/pieces on: two for character figures, one for a playset. At the very least you need a character on the stand to get going in the game. You can switch characters pretty much on the fly any time you're playing in any of the toy boxes (be it pre-made or made by a gamer). If you're playing in a playset, you can only play the characters that exist in that world (i.e. only Incredibles characters can play in the Incredibles playset) as they're for the most part story-based adventures.

There are power discs that can also be used. The circle discs can be placed underneath characters to give them specific power ups. The hexagon discs, placed where the playsets usually go, add special features to the toy box, be it changing the background, a unique look to the block pieces, vehicles, and more.

In the good ol' days you simply put your collectible figures on the shelf and dusted them once a year. ;)

News from the E3 expo: Spider-Man is coming to Disney Infinity. This is from ComingSoon.net ...
E3 2014: Spider-Man Play Set Announced for Disney Infinity 2.0
This fall, unlock an all-new adventure with "Marvel's Spider-Man Play Set" in Disney Infinity (2.0 Edition)! Swing into action with Spidey and save New York City from the toughest villains. Spider-Man and Nova are included in the "Ultimate Spider-Man Play Set Pack." Iron Fist, Nick Fury and Venom are sold separately.

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes features more than 20 new interactive figures from across the Marvel universe, original storylines penned by award-wining Marvel comic writer Brian Michael Bendis, and an all-new Toy Box mode that makes it easier for players to create and share their one-of-a-kind levels and mini-games with family and friends. In addition, all characters and power discs from last year’s release of Disney Infinity will be compatible with the Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes Toy Box.

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes will be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC and iOS tablets and smart phones.

It wouldn't be at a surprised if Star Wars is brought in as well (despite Disney's claims to the contrary), no doubt around the same time the new movie is released.

Looks like they're going with the Disney XD-verse variants of the Marvel heroes if they're going with the animated Ultimate Spider-Man and Nova. Which I hope means Danny Trejo will do Venom's voice like he did in the Phineas and Ferb/Marvel crossover.

Also at the E3 expo, Nintendo unveiled their Skylanders / Infinity clone series of figures, called amiibo (lowercase "a")...
Nintendo amiibo
  • Toy figures, with embedded chips, released by Nintendo.
  • The characters' virtual history will be stored on the plastic figures.
  • Wii U system will recognise the figure by touching them on the Wii U GamePad.
  • Nintendo is working on a peripheral reader for the Nintendo 3DS, to be released next year.
  • Characters then come to life in compatible games.
The first line-up of amiibo figures, due out this year, features 10 characters from well-known Nintendo franchises: the Vilager from Animal Crossing, the Wii Fit trainer, sword-wielding Link from The Legend of Zelda, intergalctic soldier Samus Aran from Metroid, Pikachu from Pokemon, iconic gorilla Donkey Kong, pink shape-shifter Kirby, and Mario, Princess Peach, and Yoshi from Super Mario Bros.

The company said the figures would be compatible with the upcoming Wii U fighting game Super Smash Bros and would eventually work with other games, including the recently released racing title Mario Kart 8 and forthcoming platformers Yoshi's Woolly World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Bill Trinen, senior product marketing manager of Nintendo of America, said other amiibo figures and games are "in the works". The price of the figures wasn't announced.

"Combining amiibo with our games opens up a whole range of potential new gameplay experiences," Trinen said.

Now Lego are jumping on the "interactive toy" bandwagon too ...
Lego Fusion blends real and virtual blocks
Construct something and you’ll see it automatically appear in a tablet game.

With its new Fusion sets, Lego moves into the digital world while keeping one foot firmly planted in real life.

These boxes come with 200 building blocks which, when used to make structures and other models, can be transferred block-for-block into an app for iPads and Android tablets.

The bricks need to be placed on a special base called a Fusion Capture Plate. These allow you to build 16x16 brick “facades” which will appear in the app after you’ve photographed them with your tablet’s camera. Then, whatever you’ve built can be manipulated in games and other activities.

For example, in the “Town Master” game, you can drop your facade in a virtual Lego town and have the rest of the house build around it automatically (in a similar colour scheme and building style). In another game, your facade is used to create a castle tower that defends against waves of enemies. Designs will also be shareable via the Lego online community.

The games are certainly aimed at the younger market, and the technology isn’t all that complex at present – you can’t, for instance, build a huge car and have it virtually replicated in the app just by taking photos – but it’s certainly an interesting indication of the way in which Lego’s willing to embrace new tech.

The Fusion sets will go on sale in August price at US$35.

The latest trailer for 2.0.

So here is the line-up so far:

Marvel Super Heroes
Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Nick Fury, Loki, Venom, Green Goblin, Nova, Iron Fist, Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Groot, Ronan The Accuser

Disney
Donald Duck, Maleficent, Merida, Stitch, Tinkerbell, Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Hiro Hamada, Baymax

It appears that the 2.0 figures can only be played on the 2.0 stand. 1.0 figures can be played on 2.0, so essentially the best way to go for folks looking to get started is to pick up the 2.0 starter set. Of course, this may mean losing out on Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow, and Mike Sullivan as they are only available in the 1.0 starter set.

It was bound to happen. 8)

Disney has announced 3.0 and the primary playset...

STAR WARS

Official information on 3.0 and what players can expect (link)

Here's the rundown:

- There will be three Star Wars playsets: Twilight of the Republic (Prequel Trilogy and Clone Wars), Rise Against the Empire (Original Trilogy), and The Force Awakens.

- Starter Pack appears to be Twilight of the Republic with Clone Wars era Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano included.

- Playable Star Wars characters so far announced include Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Clone Wars era Obi-Wan Kenobi, Clone Wars era Yoda, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader. All Star Wars characters can be playable in any of the three Star Wars playsets.

- There will be a new Marvel playset, which will presumably be Age of Ultron, and include playable Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron.

- The new Disney Playset will be based on Inside Out with Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust being playable.

- Sam Flynn and Quorra from TRON had previously been digital-only characters (on PC and Mobile devices), but will now have physical figures to purchase.

- Regular Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Mulan, and Olaf have been added as playable characters as well.

- New Toy Box expansion games announced so far are Toy Box Takedown (action/adventure) and Toy Box Speedway (kart racing).

No release date has been announced yet, but it is expected sometime this fall. Pre-orders are being accepted right now by most retailers.

Liking the designs here...Leia finally resembles the very fetching figure we saw back at Comic-Con in 2008 (scroll about a third down a fair bit to see the photo here):

The following year, Acme Archives sold limited prints (750 to be exact) of the Princess Leia Character Key that me and my friends were able to snag. And I do agree that it would appear the designers on Infinity were probably looking at these for some additional inspirations.

I like the idea of all the Star Wars figures being playable on any of the Star Wars playsets as that just adds to what I feel is part of the appeal and the essence of Infinity, letting the imagination run wild. Clone Wars era Anakin facing off against Vader on the Death Star, Luke taking on Darth Maul, the Millennium Falcon mowing down droids (yes, the Falcon and the X-Wing will be controllable vehicles in 3.0), etc. Oodles of fun to be had.

Yes, I'm geeking out, but it's in a good way.
