Andy Panda .. and Miranda Panda .. and .. Charlie Chicken!
Charlie Chicken only appeared in two
Andy Panda cartoons:
Andy Panda's Victory Garden and
Meatless Tuesday -- both released in 1943. I'm not sure his name is ever mentioned 'on-screen', in either cartoon .. but he was never seen again -- in
animated form.
However, Dell started printing
Andy Panda comic books at around that time .. and -- since Walter Lantz' stable of recurring cartoon characters was so small -- Charlie became elevated to the role of 'co-star' in Andy Panda's adventures!
Charlie Chicken was prominently featured alongside Andy Panda in comic books, throughout the 1940s & 50s .. he was basically the 'Goofy' to Andy's 'Mickey Mouse' .. which is somewhat appropriate, since Andy's character design seen here is the one revised for Lantz by Freddy Moore, in 1949 -- who had also refined Mickey's look at Disney, several years earlier.
Dell ceased publishing
Andy Panda comic books in 1962 .. but brought the title back (in 'reprint' form) from 1973-1977. Around
that time,
new comic-book adventures featuring Andy Panda and Charlie Chicken began appearing in Mexico .. in spanish language only, natch.
By the mid-1980s, Charlie Chicken had graduated to solo stories, apart from Andy Panda. He even gained a pair of identical-twin nephews: Chic & Chuc!
