Yeah, this one stings. He was at a Peanuts panel when we were at Comic-Con, so I got to see him then. He had troubles related to bipolar disorder, which apparently suddenly sent him down a bad path. Sad.

Douglas Trumbull, age 79.

Wow. I just finished a book about the making of Star Trek TMP, partially telling how his taking over the visual FX saved the film. But, aside from that.... 2001. Close Encounters. Some of Blade Runner - quite a legacy!!! (That, and two somewhat notorious but interesting flops as a director, but good tries!)

Absolute legend. One of the most important people to ever work in the industry. Sad to hear.

I met Doug once at a cinematographer show and was introduced to him by a mutual friend who knew how in awe of him I was. I’ve met my fair share of "famous people" and don’t get fazed as such, but this was one time I was almost completely gobsmacked and didn’t really know what to say. I’ve always kept up with his work and developments and very much enjoy his two "flops". Nice that people remembered him enough to post here. Often overlooked and underrated amazing guy. The Back To The Future ride at Universal is still one of the greatest such experiences of its kind. RIP.

This is an unexpected, very sad, shocker. :(

Thanks for the bawdy comedies, Mr R, and for all the fun. So glad you got to see Ghostbusters return to life properly, and sad you won’t be around for more. RIP.

Disney legend Tim Considine has passed at 81. He was great in "My Three Sons", and "Spin and Marty". A truly sad loss.

Of course! Maybe this will nudge Disney into putting it up on Disney+... ha.

Oscar winning actor William Hurt passed away at 71.

Hurt was a well respected actor, at one point being nominated for Best Actor for three consecutive years (winning the first, Kiss of the Spider Woman). Most modern audiences know him best as Gen. Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was completing a rare animation turn, participating in the forthcoming animated series Pantheon for AMC, when he passed.

Apparently still sadly without a US disc edition, even on DVD, or available to stream anywhere.

He would also be known as the "inventor" of David in Kubrick/Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. A very fine, dependable actor who was always fully immersed in his roles and deserved to have a bigger career and more recognition from wider audiences than he did (also see The Accidental Tourist). RIP.

I always thought he was very good, and his Oscar noms certainly placed him in the top tier of actors.

Kiss of the Spider Woman briefly had a US Blu-ray release in 2008, perhaps as an Amazon exclusive, like Bogdanovich's At Long Last Love. And like that disc, the Kiss Blu-ray is now out of print and commanding big prices. However, the print used for the transfer is apparently riddled with dust and scratches, and wasn't cleaned up at all.

Really enjoyed his understated Bumstead in the criminally underrated Dark City. A fine performance, if I may say so.

Also The Doctor (1992 I think) where he played a high-ranking surgeon struck with cancer. Very gripping film.
You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

William's role in A History of Violence is one of the best one scene performances ever.
