Despicable Me & Minions

Post by CGIFanatic »

Synopsis: In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden deep beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by an army of tireless, little yellow minions, we discover Gru (Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI.

It looks hilarious.

And your pasted synopsis tells us more than a YEAR of trailers have ever bothered to tell us about the movie.
Not that the marketing's been as particularly helpful as that.

Yeah, from the first trailer, I thought it might like a Carmen Sandiego-like story. I got a Spy vs Spy vibe from Trailer #2. And this new one? Umm, Invader Zim?

Don't forget the "Oh, isn't this adorable?" vibe we got from trailer #3. ;)

Yesterday, I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox on Blu-Ray. Then seeing this trailer was like coming home from the moon and stepping on the Earth. It was glorious in space..beyond what you imagined. But then you realize going into space is a rarity and Earth..that's where mostly everyone is.

In other words, Fox was a rarity. Despicable Me seems like it'll have all the same crude humor, ADHD action and celebrity voices that plague the worst of animated films. You wish they would get rid of those 3 girls and just make this film the first animated anti-hero film! Still...love Gru's minions, Steve's accent and the Tex Avery animation. Besides, Fox was actually marketed like this and look how it turned out.

Oh, and I can JUST tell there were 4 3D moments when things just pop out...

Hm, yes... Steve's accent, as opposed to Gru's accent. :(

So, we've got Dr. Evil (complete with accent and cute finger-bite) leading his army of Little Green Aliens from Toy Story...OOOOOO!

(And Droo, why did you have to make me go and follow a Cloudy/Meatballs joke? Did you do that on purpose?) ;)

Just watched the new trailer.

Looks like it could end up being a lot of fun, although the story literally seems to be all over the place.

This was one of the other films I pointed to in my column on Hollywood running out of ideas and the emergence, now, of films that are only basically being made because The Incredibles was such a hit.

But despite the mess, it does look kind of fun. And I believe it's Universal that are marketing this, through their Focus Features (Coraline, 9) banner, not 20th Century Fox.

Actually it's not Focus Features who're doing this..it's a new company called Illumination Entertainment. They are also prepping a Lorax film, an Easter Bunny movie called I Hop and The Addams Family.

Though Focus could be doing the marketing. Maybe you are right Ben...

"Actually", Focus Features doesn't make its own animation. It didn't make Coraline and it didn't make 9. It distributes animation from companies it funds and works with. So although Illumination are the animation house on this (like Laika was the facility on Coraline, for instance), the film is funded and distributed by Universal Pictures, who are using their "specialist" Focus Features banner to put it out in some territories.

But...whatever...it isn't 20th Century Fox. Actually.

I dunno. The new trailer makes it look like a completely different movie than the previous teasers made it out to be. The 3 kids angle made me go "wait...what?". It looks a lot less interesting to me now honestly.

I wsn't really interested in this flick based upon the previous teasers but if I'm going to go and see one animated bad guy film this year I think this one has my money at the moment. I admit I laughed a number of times or more smiled at parts while watching the trailer. And once again a trailerthat tells me what the general gist of the story is without giving everything away. And strangely the trailer makes me want to like the bad guy and hope he defeats the good guys. And sure the girls seems overly cute but I think they may balance out the grumpiness of the lead. I have hopes for this movie.

I also got that Spy Vs. Spy vibe from the second trailer. And I thought that was kinda cool. Now I'm a bit disappointed.
