I was reading the "Italian childhood" synopsis on other sites, and thinking "Too simple...Are they giving every ethnic family album screen time after Coco and Bao?"

Until we got to the sea monster, and then "Yep, THAT'S our Pixar. They wouldn't forget the plot. "

Hopefully it will be better than Onward and not as pretentious as Docter's films tend to be. I'm looking forward to this, but not as much as I look forward to Encanto.

Design of the two boys are cute. Scenery looks more cartoony compared to their recent output, such as Toy Story 4. I like that.

Set on the coast of Italy in the dazzling summer days, its central character, Luca, and his friend Alberto are actually sea creatures who appear human on dry land, but take on a fishier form underwater. In a Little Mermaid riff, the pair get to experience life up where they walk, run, and stay all day in the sun – befriending a human girl along the way.

For all that it’s about magical sea creatures, the heart of Luca goes right back to Casarosa’s childhood. “I was born in Genoa, and my summers were spent on beaches,” he tells Empire. “I met my best friend when I was 11. I was really shy and I found this troublemaker of a kid who had a completely different life. I wanted to make a movie about those kinds of friendships that help you grow up.” According to the director, the result is a Pixar film that pays homage to Fellini and other classic Italian filmmakers, with a dash of Miyazaki in the mix too. It sounds like the cinematic summer blast we’ll all be desperate for when winter finally ends.

Is it me, or is the movie throwing a Claymation vibe? I am excited about this film.

Definitely a stop-motion look, yes. The personal stories are always the best.

So far I'm pleased with what I see, I don't mind the cartoony look of the characters. The synopsis sounds very indie, like it is a film about someone's life, which sounds very mature, very interesting.

It's funny how this time Pixar goes with the painterly look with Luca while Disney goes with the photo realistic look with Raya. Out of the two I'm more excited about Luca.
