Disney Pixar's Turning Red

Post by Daniel »

New original movie:
Director of the Academy Award-winning short Bao, Domee Shi, brings us Turning Red. Meet Mei: she experiences the awkwardness of being a teenager, with an added twist: when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda. Turning Red comes to theaters March 11, 2022

Sounds interesting. Gives me a Ghibli vibe.

Glad I’m not the only one getting an Aardman vibe from this.

Call me old-timer, but I'm getting anime vibes of a...different sort: :?

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:Shi's movie, Turning Red, about a teenager dealing with a family curse that turns her into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited, due in March 2022.
Ah, a family curse.

Getting a Teen Wolf/Hulk vibe. Looks cute. The Backstreet Boys needle drop was pretty great. Major Ghibli vibes when Mei is crying and the general art style. Clouds look so painty.

Tiger! ;)

I know we're very rarely impressed by a new Pixar teaser, but this, to me, looks like the nadir of the studio's work, and the film that most feels like either the other studios are really catching up to Pixar's dominance, or that they are sinking to those levels and are now just one of the increasing animation crowd.

I will say I’m liking the actual *direction*, but the animation looks sub-par for even Sony, and it’s a shame they took the way way out of the transformation being a boring puff of smoke (and pink at that…what's wrong with RED — hello, it's in the title people!) instead of the gradual build up it started as, and would have been fun to see happen as a riff on a Hulkout, which could happen once or twice and then revert to something quicker later in the film. But a magic pink puff? Pixar is better than that.

Likewise the designs look slightly Sony-ish, I want to say? They’re not Pixar people, or Disney people, or even DreamWorks people, which is what makes this also feel less like a Pixar film than most, recently. And what does the teaser tell us about the movie? Naturally, we're not going to get the full plot, but who are these characters? Why is the Mom so bizarre? Why does the girl go boom? If this is supposed to generally get us excited for more, and want us to get to know the characters and answers to those questions, then it doesn’t do a very good job at all.

And about that title? Was Turning Orange taken? Because I’m seeing very little red here, logo excepted. Nope, I’m afraid I’m going to need a lot more convincing on this one, and hope the "red" doesn’t end up being the red face of embarrassment, especially coming after the rush of very good originals we have just enjoyed from the studio.
