DreamWorks' The Bad Guys

Post by Ben »

GeffreyDrogon wrote: December 15th, 2021, 6:32 pm What do you think about the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film The Bad Guys? I think it looks promising, and I definitely like the shading.

So, did this just suddenly come out of nowhere…!? I don’t remember any real mention of The Bad Guys before now, or have I just not been paying attention?

Either way, it looks kinda bonkers fun, if HIGHLY derivative and full of many, many, many elements from a bunch of other films and properties, like, for instance: just because they’re bad guys, doesn’t mean they have to be *bad* guys, right? ;)

It's the first I've heard of it.

Well, it looks like a DWA film. Not a horrible premise, but I see nothing that advances the art form or stands out as being at all original. It might be perfectly okay, but... Meh.

That animation is crazy brilliant! Loving the style here!

Honestly, zero interest from me. It doesn’t resemble DreamWorks films per se (although it definitely does to some degree) as much as incredibly stale pieces of animated films in general from the last 20 or so years (as Ben said.)
You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

Read about this months ago here. Like always, I get distracted and forget to bring it up...

Digged the trailer. Really like the art style. The cel-shading makes it stand out a bit, similar to the comic book technique of Into the Spider-Verse. Makes the action really pop! Looks fun.

Has Pixar ever done “cartoony”? I feel they seem to avoid that…

Second trailer:

I liked the initial trailer, but this one so much better and funnier! "Stealing the Mona Lisa disguised as the Mona Lisa" Giving me "Lupin the Third" vibes. Looks fantastic!

Seems promising enough. I wish I could get excited by DWA like I used to, though.

This looks fun and funny. And I'm still loving the animation.

Review is up!

"After years of being bad, can DreamWorks… I mean can The Bad Guys leave their dark days behind them and start being good?"

We're still getting the default DreamWorks plot of "The picked-on guys who dream of not being picked on anymore", but without Jeffrey Katzenberg and his Disney demons, there doesn't seem to be quite as much bile in it anymore.

It’s weird…this was listed last week at Amazon but when I wen5 to order it, it wouldn’t let me. I thought it was yet another of their silly "we don’t want to send it to you in the UK" things, but it wasn’t — it stated the release was December 31st!

Yep…just looked at Amazon still have that date!
