Ooh, may be a Turning Red weekend! Nice that they added a making of, too.

At least I don’t need to waste any more time on Nightmare Alley. I saw it this week and have decided that, despite the fan love for some reason, I just can’t rate del Toro anymore. Pan's Labyrinth apart (and even that I have to be in the mood for, for obvious reasons), and Pacific Rim for its absurdity, I’ve not dug any of his films, really. Even Hellboy I had to watch a couple of times before I got anything out of it, and can’t remember if I liked the second one any more or less! But each time I hope a new film will help me see what others apparently do, I’m let down.

Nightmare Alley has an interminably long first act, with little to no tension and a setup that both goes nowhere *and* is obvious. I kept watching as, when it finally changes gears, a mystery story comes in and provides a bit more interest, but this is also dragged out and eventually goes nowhere, without any twist that you might see coming, and an end that appears to pay off the setup from the beginning but doesn’t quite commit to it either, making it yet another frustrating del Toro experience. Yes, it looks gorgeous, and I could maybe see the cinematography nominations it’s had, but Best Picture…wha? What now? Harrumph.

Sure, just as soon as someone can explain to ME why we're still supposed to get excited whenever Guillermo Del Toro, the Fat Old Tim Burton, directs another fanboy-based project.
("The Shape of Water" is healthy evidence for the "Oscar-voting screwup causing 2nd-placers to win" theory.)

And I ask that fresh out of having suffered through almost all of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark."
I didn't watch all of it, since the experience was like being trapped in a crowded elevator of "It" fanboys talking about the first Goosebumps movie.

This is the same point I’m making. "Ooh, it’s a new del Toro!", and yet every single time I am left unimpressed. Every. Single. Time. Nightmare Alley wouldn’t even qualify as a below par, average episode of Twilight Zone, and the reboot version at that!

You ARE aware that Nightmare Alley was a classic disturbing 1947 film noir, that Del Toro wanted to remake for the classic Burton-esque reasons of Oo, Edgy, not to mention Cool Misunderstood Fanboys Like Me Have Heard of It?
