Gosh, didn’t know about the Little Shop comic. That’s u-g-l-y, and totally non-representative of the movie characters, most like a likeness issue. As a comics translation of the original Corman movie, I could see how you could end up with a straight, actual horror version, but that’s not the movie musical at all! Even as an uberfan and being intrigued to find out about this, I don’t want to see it!

That's comic book legend Gene Colan on the Little Shop cover, with inker Dave Hunt. They also did the interiors. Colan was known for the moody art of Tomb of Dracula, but also had significant runs on Iron Man and Batman, among many other achievements. He was an odd choice for the Little Shop musical adaptation, though!

Incidentally, I just found out that Corman's original film DID get a comic, from a Corman publishing imprint in 1995! Three issues.

Haha…I am just watching Alien Nation. Never really been able to get through it in one go, though I have seen all of it in various bits, but they played it again for James Caan recently and I thought I’d give it another go. Needless to say, I’ve watched half, with the end still to go…!

Cool! I have V, Roger Rabbit, Cool World, and Jonny Quest.

The V comic was actually pretty good, with interesting Infantino/deZuniga art. But Jonny Quest was definitely the classiest title (though that particular Dave Stevens cover went for the sex appeal).

Beetle Bailey was always my favorite on Silly Paté.

DC Comics had such success with their licensed The Fox And The Crow comic books back in the 1940s that they also published several 'fake' cartoon-based comics .. with their own stable of cartoon animal stars!

There was Hollywood Funny Folks, featuring the antics of Nutsy Squirrel (the comic was later retitled Nutsy Squirrel in the mid-1950s) ..

.. appearing alongside the above characters in these comics were other similar 'Hollywood-inspired' cartoon features, like Dizzy Dog, Doodles Duck, Bo Bunny, J. Rufus Lion, Dodo & The Frog, Nip & Chip .. and many more!

Several of these 'funny animal' characters had cameo appearances in DC's Captain Carrot & His Amazing Zoo Crew! comic book, in the early-1980s. Peter Porkchops actually became a member of the Zoo Crew: as Pig-Iron!

I'm not sure if any kids of the 1940s & 50s were actually fooled by this 'branding' .. "gosh; I wonder howcum I've never seen a Nutsy Squirrel cartoon at the movie theater?!"
