This has the feeling of "Warner has a new corporate muggins", after Chris Nolan left the studio, as fueled by Warners GVK opening-day self-delusions that audiences liked G:KotM.
It'll probably be based on the "new" canon, as I remember the classic 80's series being as Rankin-Bass silly as it was cool, but, hey, if this one jumped the gate before GVK's ultimate box office, I can live with that.
